Dr. Mandar Dewoolkar has been named the recipient of Vermont Campus Compact's 2011 Engaged Scholar Award for community-based teaching and scholarship that addresses social, economic, and environmental concerns, and for development of collaborative partnerships with communities that engage students in local and global communities. The award will be presented at the 8th Annual Vermont Campus Compact Statewide Awards Ceremony & Reception on Thursday, April 7 in the Capitol Plaza Hotel & Conference Center, Montpelier, VT from 4 to 6 pm.
The Vermont Campus Compact is a statewide consortium representing 17 college and university presidents working to strengthen communities and educate for informed and active citizenship to strengthen communities and improve lives in Vermont and elsewhere.
“This award recognizes the high caliber of teaching excellence within our College,” says Bernard “Chip” Cole, Interim Dean of the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.
Dr. Dewoolkar is associate professor in civil and environmental engineering in the School of Engineering and specializes in soil mechanics. He received the 2007 UVM's Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2010 UVM Outstanding Service Learning Faculty Award. His CE175 Capstone Design course (Spring 2011) involves students working on service-learning projects with communities and non-profit organizations interested in finding solutions to their local civil and environmental engineering related problems.
