Pulitzer-winning journalist among speakers at UVM reunion

Journalist Eric Lipton will be one of a dozen UVM faculty and alumni headlining the "Voices of Vermont" speaker series at this year's reunion weekend, June 4-7.Lipton, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter in the Washington bureau of The New York Times and a 1987 graduate of UVM, has covered everything from the World Trade Center attack to Hurricane Katrina. But for the last six months, it has been a different kind of disaster: the Great Recession of 2009. His talk, entitled "Inside the Meltdown," looks inside the frantic government effort to bail out the economy, offering a view from inside Treasury and the FDIC as they scramble to save banks and prop up the auto industry. His stories have focused, in part, on the business executives that have figured out a way to profit from the misery. "It is the story of capitalism: there are always winners and losers" he says. "The question is, will the bailout work?" Lipton will speak Saturday, June 6, at 12:45 p.m., in Billings North Lounge. The event is free and open to the public on a space-available basis.
