On May 30, 2009 the Green Mountain Club (GMC) elected new officers and awarded four Honorary Life Memberships and a President’s Award. The awards were presented at the Green Mountain Club’s 99th annual meeting at its new Visitor Center on Route 100 between Waterbury and Stowe. Marge Fish of Londonderry was elected as GMC President, replacing Richard Windish of Reading who completed his third and final one-year term. Jean Haigh of Craftbury was elected Vice President, Dick Andrews of Springfield was elected Secretary, and Bill Lyons of Bennington was re-elected Treasurer.
Honorary Life Memberships, GMC’s highest form of volunteer recognition, were awarded to Barbara Brown Watts of Waterbury Center for her longtime work as an office volunteer, Hugh and Jeanne Joudry of Stratton for their work as Caretakers at the Stratton Mountain Fire Tower since the 1960s, and Richard Krompegal of Connecticut for his work leading volunteer trailwork outings.
Jeff Schoellkopf of Warren was the recipient of a GMC President’s Award in recognition of his service as chairman of the committee that planned and designed GMC’s new Visitor Center and as Lead Architect for the project. More information about GMC's new Visitor Center can be found here.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Green Mountain Club. The Long Trail could not exist without the hundreds of volunteers who pitch in every year to take care of it. Volunteer duties range from data entry to tinkering to bushwhacking along property boundaries to heavy-duty trailwork. More information about volunteering for GMC can be found here.
