Alec Newcomb, executive vice president of MyWebGrocer, joined the Greater Burlington Y's Board of Directors last week. His nomination was unanimously approved during the organization's annual meeting, held on May 20 at the Burlington Country Club.
Mr. Newcomb, a South Burlington resident, graduated from the University of Vermont in 1995 with degrees in history and political science. He is an internet veteran, having built 14 years of experience leading sales and product marketing teams at companies such as MTV Networks, Lycos, Bosch and two internet startups. Currently, he leads the consumer package goods business unit at MyWebGrocer, where his team is also responsible for product development, sales and marketing, business development, and operations.
“Alec will be a tremendous personal and professional asset to the Y,” says board chair Spencer Knapp. “He's well known and respected in the community, and his business acumen will be vital as we continue to move the Y forward .”
Mr. Newcomb first joined the Greater Burlington Y in 1994 while an undergraduate at UVM. Now, as a local business executive, he has become an even stronger advocate for the Y's full range of programs and services.
“Affordable day care is a critical issue for growing Vermont businesses and their staff,” says Mr. Newcomb. “The Y works hard, every day, not only to provide affordable care--but to provide quality, accredited care focused on the early development of children. I'm excited to work with the board, and with [CEO] Mary Burns, to implement their vision of expanding access to childcare--as well as being a leader in health and wellness programs.”
Mr. Newcomb's term will extend through 2013.
For more than 144 years, the Greater Burlington Y has been a charitable organization with a social mission--to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, races and religions in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body. A champion and leader in youth development and healthy living, the Y is also the largest provider of high-quality, accredited and affordable childcare in the state of Vermont--serving more than 1,000 children per day at 29 sites in 5 counties. Financial assistance is always available.
