Each year it is an honor for North Country Hospital’s scholarship committee to review the applicants and make selections based on each student’s essays, transcripts, extra-curricular activities, as well as need. Applicants must also live in the hospital’s service area in order to initially apply. This year, similar to in the past, North Country Hospital will award more than $30,000 in scholarships to deserving students pursuing a career in healthcare. Courses of study include pre-med, neuroscience, physical therapy, radiology, nursing, psychiatry and dental hygiene, to name a few.
Recipients of the Caryl B. Custer Scholarship for Nursing Students award this year were Sara Ferorelli, Lindsey Gaboriault, Morgan Miller (all North Country graduates) and Alyssa Royer, a Lake Region Union High School graduate. This fund was created by summer resident Dr. Keith Custer in memory of and on behalf of his wife Caryl, who was a nurse manager in Florida for many years. She individually supported many nursing students with scholarship monies in the past. With this fund, $1,000 is awarded annually to each student for the duration of their program.
Created in 2010 to honor Cecile Gelineau, RN, an exceptional and legendary healthcare professional, the Legends Scholarship Fund is dedicated to serving the needs of our community, and of local students pursuing a healthcare career. Dr. David Alsobrook and Dr. Thomas A.E. Moseley have also received the honor. This year’s recipients of the $500 award go to Paige Leonard, graduating from North Country Union High School, and to adult student Cindy Besaw, who is pursuing a nursing degree at CCV.
Lake Region Union High School (LRUHS) graduates Cody Dolloff and Shannon Eubanks were awarded the hospital's Healthcare Career Scholarship, along with North Country Union High School (NCUHS) seniors Katelyn Bowen, Jade Dandurand, Myra Degre, Stephanie Ducharme, Myrriah Gonyaw, Makayla Limlaw, and Hollie Smith. This scholarship is made possible by the annual North Country Hospital Scholarship Golf Tournament, with proceeds each year going directly to awardees. The 26th annual scramble is set for Friday, August 8, registration 12 noon, shotgun start at 1 pm at Orleans Country Club.
