Cheung Wong, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and director of gynecologic oncology, has been appointed as associate dean for continuing medical education at the UVM College of Medicine. The announcement was made today by Frederick C. Morin, III, M.D., dean of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and Paul A. Taheri, M.D., M.B.A., senior associate dean for clinical affairs and president of the UVM Medical Group.
Wong replaces Jeffrey Klein, M.D., professor of radiology and director of thoracic radiology, who has served as associate dean since June 2006. Klein was recently named editor of RadioGraphics, a prestigious journal published by the Radiological Society of North America, and has stepped down in order to focus on those responsibilities along with his clinical and research activities.
Board-certified in gynecologic oncology and obstetrics and gynecology, Wong has expertise in ovarian cancer and the management of pre-invasive carcinomas, as well as the study and treatment of gynecologic malignancies, including robot-assisted surgery. He has an active research program focused on study of the factors that promote angiogenesis in epithelial ovarian cancer. His early studies demonstrate elevated levels of these factors in human ovarian tumors, and he currently serves as UVM/Fletcher Allen principal investigator of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute-designated collaborative research group. He has published more than 20 articles, and has been a featured presenter at national and international conferences, grand rounds, and educational programs. He is also a reviewer for the journals Gynecologic Oncology, Cancer and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
A fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Wong is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and serves on the membership committee for the national Gynecologic Oncology Group. He has earned a series of teaching awards, including the Chief Resident Excellence in Teaching Award, the Alpha Omega Alpha Excellence in Medical Student Teaching Award, and has earned the national Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award four times in the last nine years.
Wong, who joined UVM/Fletcher Allen in 2000 as assistant professor, was asked to serve as interim director of gynecologic oncology in 2002. He was subsequently named director in 2003, and was promoted to associate professor in 2005. He also served as associate director of the department’s residency program from 2001 to 2008, and has been an active member of the Vermont Cancer Center, serving on the executive committee since 2004. Wong earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. He also participated in the Leadership Development program at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2009.
