The Rutland Area Medical Community, a volunteer committee comprising physicians, retired physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, has awarded $3,000 scholarships to six area students and medical community employees who are pursuing or advancing their career in health care.

The awardees are: Martha Cotter, a Rutland High School graduate who will attend Columbia University beginning in the fall; Alyssa Kennedy, a current student at University of Vermont's College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Margo Nolan, a current student at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College; and Rutland Regional Medical Center emergency department technicians Wendi Fitz-Gerald and Emma Johnson, current students at Vermont State University, and Ben Hamilton, currently enrolled at UVM's Larner College of Medicine.

The scholarships are intended to stimulate the region’s best and brightest students, encouraging them to continue their education in the field of health care.

"Now in its eighth year, the Rutland Area Medical Community scholarship program received 31 outstanding applications from diverse candidates throughout our local region," said Dr. Stanley Shapiro, co-chair of the volunteer scholarship committee.
