Dr. Louis “Chip” Thayer Merriam recently joined Dr. Ziedins at Berlin General Surgery, a Fletcher Allen Health Care practice located in Building A on the Central Vermont Medical Center campus.
“We are pleased that working through Fletcher Allen Partners (FAP) we were able to recruit a general surgeon of Dr. Merriam’s caliber to practice in central Vermont,” noted Central Vermont Medical Center President and CEO Judy Tartaglia.
Dr. Merriam received his MD at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He did his General Surgery Residency at Northwestern University in Chicago where he also completed a Surgical Research Fellowship. He is certified by the National Board of Examiners in General Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
Most recently he was a Service Chief of General Surgery, Division of General and Trauma Surgery at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, Department of Surgery in Stony Brook, New York where he was also an Associate Professor of Surgery.
“We are thrilled to make the move to Vermont, it’s a dream my wife, kids and I have had for quite some time” said Dr. Merriam. “Having the chance to work in a smaller, more patient centered environment like CVMC is exciting and full of new opportunities.” Dr. Merriam is appointed as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Vermont, College of Medicine and will be both teaching in Burlington as well as developing new educational programs here at CVMC.
Dr. Merriam, his wife Jessie and their two children six-year-old Isabella and four-year-old Nicholas are settling into central Vermont. Dr. Merriam enjoys the sports offered in all seasons in Vermont including hiking, biking and skiing.
