Joseph Healy has been named Director of Marketing and Communications for St. Johnsbury Academy, effective January 10, Headmaster Tom Lovett announced this week. Healy will oversee advertising and promotion, publications and printed material and overall branding of the Academy (stjacademy.org).
“Joe brings a wealth of experience in editing and publishing combined with a deep knowledge of marketing and branding and a true love of Vermont,” said Jack Cummings, the school’s Associate Headmaster for Advancement and Admissions. “One of our immediate initiatives will be to spread the word about our Good Neighbor scholar program; we’ll launch this through messages early this year on Vermont Public Radio.”
Healy was vice president/editor-in-chief of Vermont Magazine from 2002 through 2007 and operated a satellite office for the magazine in St. Johnsbury. He formerly lived in East Burke, Vermont.
Most recently, he was associate publisher of Fly Rod & Reel magazine, one of the country’s leading fly-fishing publications, where he increased advertising revenue and circulation during his three-year tenure. He also began a “Fly-Fishing in Schools” pilot program in Maine high schools.
Healy was an editor of Outdoor Life magazine in the early 1990s, and later served as editorial director of American Angler, Fly Tyer, and Saltwater Fly Fishing magazines, based in Bennington, Vermont.
His book Training a Young Pointer: How the Experts Developed My Bird Dog and Me was published in 2005 by Stackpole Books. He also edited Love Story of the Trout (2010) and In Hemingway’s Meadow (2009) while launching Fly Rod & Reel Books.
Healy’s freelance writing has appeared in Ski Press, Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, Outdoor Life, Salt Water Sportsman, and other magazines. He also wrote a fishing-travel column for the Miami Herald, and contributed to ESPN Outdoors.com.
Healy, his wife, Robin, and their young son Teagan will relocate from Maine to Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
“The Kingdom has always felt like home, so this is a homecoming both professionally and personally,” said Healy. “I’m excited about becoming immersed in celebrating the many educational successes of this amazing, world-class institution.”
St. Johnsbury Academy is an independent school serving students in grades 9-12 and a postgraduate year.
