Essex Junction resident, Dr. Edward Mahoney, professor of religious studies at Saint Michael's College, was awarded the 2012 Called and Gifted Award by the Association of Graduate Programs in Ministry (AGPIM) at their annual meeting held Feb. 11 at the Redemptorist Renewal Center in Tucson, Arizona.
Professor Mahoney is director of the Graduate Theology and Pastoral Ministry program at Saint Michael’s, as well as a professor in the Religious Studies Department.
The Called and Gifted Award is presented annually to a member of who has made a substantial and lasting contribution to graduate ministry education through leadership, teaching and scholarship; and has fostered collegiality among the various graduate programs in ministry. Dr. Kyle Kramer, President of AGPIM, noted that Dr. Mahoney also has made significant contributions to the field of theological and ministerial education and formation; and has represented the interests of the Association at regional and national levels in both ecclesial and academic circles.
AGPIM is a national organization of educators, theologians and administrators representing Roman Catholic institutions that offer graduate programs in ministry that prepare students for various areas of service to the Church including parish and family life, pastoral care, and religious education. The Graduate Theology and Pastoral Ministry program at Saint Michael’s has been a member of AGPIM since its inception in 1986, and Professor Mahoney has participated in the association for the past 20 years. He served for six years as the Treasurer of AGPIM.
Dr. Mahoney organized Waters of Life: Sacred and Profaned, an interfaith conference sponsored by the Edmundite Center for Faith and Culture at Saint Michael's in April 2007. He is expert in the Human Genome Project; ethics and genetics; fundamental moral theology; ethics of long-term care. Additionally, he has served on all major curriculum committees at Saint Michael’s.
For the past 50 years the Graduate Theology and Pastoral Ministry program at Saint Michael’s College has provided an important service to the academy and the Church, and has garnered an international reputation for its quality and excellence of its faculty.
