Promotion announcement - Commander, Criminal Division

Col Matthew T Birmingham, director of the Vermont State Police, is pleased to announce the following promotion: Capt Dan Trudeau, commander of the Major Crime Unit, to major/Criminal Division Commander at Headquarters. He will take sole command of the division effective Dec 23, 2018.

Major Trudeau has served the people of Vermont for nearly 16 years. He began his career with the Vermont State Police in January 2003 as a trooper at the Brattleboro Barracks, then was promoted to detective trooper in 2007. He transferred to the Narcotics Investigation Unit the following year before being promoted to detective sergeant in 2010 and then detective lieutenant five years later at the Rockingham Barracks. He earned his next promotion in 2016, to captain, as commander of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. In 2017 he transferred to commander of the Major Crime Unit.

The Vermont State Police has three divisions, each commanded by a major: Field Force, which covers all uniform police services; Support Services, which oversees recruitment, training, technology and internal affairs; and the Criminal Division, which investigates major crimes including homicides, drugs and other specialized matters.

The Criminal Division oversees the Major Crime Unit, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Special Investigations. The MCU investigates Vermont’s most serious offenses, especially homicides and suspicious missing-persons cases, along with officer-involved shootings. BCI handles other serious matters, such as death investigations, sexual assaults, crimes against children, embezzlements, robberies and other felony-level cases. Special Investigations oversees the Narcotics Investigation Unit, the Vermont Intelligence Center and the Homeland Security Unit, along with VSP member assigned to federal joint task forces.
