Eric Sturm, AIA, LEED AP, formerly of Bread Loaf Corporation, has joined Maclay Architects in Waitsfield, VT. Sturm, a Senior Project Manager in the firm, brings more than two decades of experience to Maclay’s commercial, institutional, and residential design teams.
Sturm launched his award-winning architecture career in Washington, DC, where he held positions of increasing responsibility at BBGM, OPX, and SmithGroup, one of the nation’s preeminent integrated design firms. Much of Sturm’s early career focused on commercial projects in government, workplace, large-scale mixed-use residential projects, and hospitality for Marriott, Hilton, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. Projects of note include the LEED Platinum 1200 19th Street NW Office Building, the award-winning SoMa Office Complex in Reston, VA with Boston Properties, and the L’Enfant Plaza renovation and redevelopment.
With a deep appreciation for the impact architecture and the built world has on the day-to-day lives of individuals and their families, Sturm has also worked with Ted Oldham, the founder of OPX, on some high-profile residential projects for the Marriott family, including Bill Marriot’s residence, Carrie and David Marriot’s vacation home in New Hampshire, and their home in Potomac, Maryland.
In his Vermont design career, Sturm joined WallGoldfinger, a high-end, custom, commercial furniture marker, where he was Vice President of Sales, and co-developed their Summit Table Product line, which can be found in their showroom in NYC, and is installed in Fidelity’s board room in Boston, MA. While at WallGoldfinger, Sturm also designed boardroom tables for Middlebury College and Biogen respectively.
Prior to joining Maclay, as an architect at Bread Loaf Corporation, Sturm designed, produced, and managed Long Trail School’s Fieldhouse in Dorset. For Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, he developed the master plan, designed and oversaw the production of a new library, cafe, and other spaces. At Camp Dudley at Kiniya, Sturm managed the design and construction of a new dining hall and studio building.
“Eric’s broad diversity of experience and expertise, along with his similar mission makes him a unique fit with the firm. He brings superior technical abilities, a strong design aesthetic, business acumen, and a passion for green design. Plus, his deep experience in commercial projects both nationally and in Vermont, and in high-end residences and second homes, makes him an excellent fit for Maclay,” said Bill Maclay, firm founder.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with -- and learn from -- Bill Maclay, who is a visionary and nationally known pioneer in Net Zero design. Bill’s assembled a collaborative team of design professionals who are passionate about their clients and their work, and the firm’s portfolio speaks for itself,” said Eric Sturm.
Sturm earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture, Printmaking, and Architecture at Bennington College, and a Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) from Syracuse University. He later completed a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University. Sturm’s taught interior design and architecture classes at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design in Washington, DC and at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT.
