Vermont landscape architect elected to profession's national council

Terry Boyle, retired landscape architect and founder of Burlington-based T.J. Boyle & Associates, has been named to the Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). This is one of the highest honors the society confers on a member.

Nominated by the Vermont Chapter of the ASLA in the Leadership/Management category, Boyle earned the honor for his leadership in resource planning, scenic assessment, road corridor planning, and his ongoing local and state political involvement, which have guided Vermont’s development of high standards for scenic landscapes and rich natural and cultural heritage.

“Terry’s detailed landscape-classification and visual-resource-analysis systems have resulted in many new practice areas for landscape architects and set a notable example for the profession,” says Adam Portz, VTASLA President. “Simply put, Vermont would not now look the way it does without him.”

The analytical systems Boyle helped develop have shaped the placement of power lines in New England, the designation of scenic roads, and the understanding of development’s environmental impact.

Boyle earned a degree in landscape architecture and recreation management from the SUNY College of Forestry and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Boyle was one of 40 landscape architects elected to the ASLA Council of Fellows this year. The new Fellows will be formally inducted during the ASLA Annual Meeting in San Diego in October, and will thereafter use the suffix “FASLA” after their names.
