The City of Winooski is proud to recognize Rita Martel - a lifelong Winooski resident, neighbor, and friend. Although Rita isn't moving far and will always be our neighbor, the City wishes to formally thank Rita for her years of dedicated service. City Council's resolution reads:
Whereas, the City of Winooski is proud to acknowledge the legacy of community service and leadership of Rita Martel;
And Whereas, Rita Martel served as the President of the Winooski Historical Society for over 20 years, and continues to serve as the Vice President and host tours and open houses;
And Whereas, Rita Martel was integrally involved in the publishing of the first formal history devoted solely to Winooski, the first printed photographic history of Winooski, a printed English translation of the early history of Winooski's Franco-American community and the Winooski Historical Society's quarterly newsletter bulletin;
And Whereas, Rita Martel has also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, The Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, and the Vermont Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired;
And Whereas, Rita Martel has held a number of volunteer positions with the Winooski Senior Center;
And Whereas, Rita Martel co-founded Advocates for Better Care, and effort for which she was awarded 1999 Vermont Elder of the Year;
And Whereas, Rita Martel has regularly participated in Operation Bloom, beautifying city space with bright flowers;
And Whereas, Rita Martel is a consistent participant in public meetings and conversation, gives generously of her historic knowledge and wisdom, and is seen as a resource by many;
Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Residents of Winooski have immeasurably benefited from Rita Martel’s contributions to the city;
And we acknowledge that the city is not only losing a leader, but also a beloved neighbor and community member.
