Rachel Kahn-Fogel exhibits at Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace in September for Art Hop

Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace on Flynn Avenue in Burlington is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings from Vermont artist Rachel Kahn-Fogel entitled Incongruities, September 6th through the 30h. There will be an opening reception during SEABA’s Art Hop, Friday, September 6th; featuring live jazz music from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Incongruities features paintings from two recent series depicting common objects in incongruous combinations, expressing the contrasts of life: a counterbalance of terror, loss, sorrow, and pain with beauty, joy, and the sublime. Vintage Inspired, A vibrant new marketplace for antique dealers, artists and craftspeople, is located at 180 Flynn Avenue, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.

In her artist statement, Rachel Kahn-Fogel writes, “To my mind, painting is an existential act in a universe of the absurd. That is, I believe humans create their own meanings in a universe without its own meaning. And for me, creativity in the form of painting is my life’s work. In the face of terror, loss, sorrow, and pain as well as beauty, joy, and the sublime, I use the world of imagination to paint common objects in incongruous combinations to express these contrasts. I paint in year-long series, and these paintings are selected from my two most recent series. To counterbalance the dark sides of life, I use humor and playfulness to express my pleasure and delight in this existence.”

Rachel Kahn-Fogel was born and raised in Ithaca, New York. She attended Bennington College, got her B.A. from Cornell University, and her M.A. from Columbia. After teaching in New York City and Ithaca, she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for 26 years, where she had many one-woman shows, including one at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum. This is her fourth show in Vermont since moving here in 2002. She and Dan Fogel are married and have two children and two grandchildren.
