After over 20 years in the music industry, Joe Gittleman, bassist and producer for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, is bringing his experience to the Lyndon State College Music Business and Industry program.
Gittleman is eager to start this new phase of his professional career. “With all the struggles going on within the traditional music business, often overlooked are the growing number of opportunities available to motivated self-starters who have a solid understanding of the way things work. You don't need an invitation to be involved in the music business, and I hope to instill students with a healthy dose of the DIY ethic my friends and I had when we got started,” he said in an email interview.
Gittleman has a long collection of recording and producing credits, from the Bosstones and from other groups such as Gang Green, The Briggs, Chuck Ragan and Flogging Molly. He has also written and licensed compositions for films such as “Clueless,” “Chasing Amy” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” On a lighter note, Gittleman reworked the Sesame Street classic Zig Zag Dance for the Grammy nominated Elmopalooza CD.
MBI department chair Beth Norris says she is looking forward having Gittleman as a member of the department. “We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Joe’s reputation and stature join our faculty. His knowledge of and experience in all aspects of the music industry, from live performance to behind-the-scenes management, fills an important faculty role in our relatively new program. Joe’s presence will bring a new kind of credibility to our MBI major and will allow us to play in the same arena with some of the more established music industry programs. Besides all of that, I'm looking forward to working with Joe – he’s just a great guy.”
As founding member and driving-force behind the Bosstones, Gittleman has toured the world many times, often logging as many as 300 performances in one year. There is no part of the music business with which he has not been closely involved. He plans to maintain his relationship with the Bosstones.
