Governor Douglas appoints student representative to the State Board of Education

Governor Jim Douglas has announced that he has appointed Elizabeth Strano to a two-year term as a student representative on the State Board of Education.

“I am pleased to appoint Elizabeth to the State Board,” said Governor Douglas. “There were many highly qualified students who applied for a position on the Board again this year. Elizabeth stood out. I am confident that she will provide an important voice and perspective as the Board works to transform education in Vermont.”

Strano, who is resident of Bennington, will be a junior at Mt. Anthony Union High School where she is a member of the track and field team, the varsity cheerleading team and the dance team. She is a member of the French Club, the Model U.N. Club, the Rotary Interact Club and the National Honor Society, as well as attendee at the 2010 Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference. Strano is also an active member of her community, volunteering at the Bennington Museum, Garlic Fest, May Fest and Relay for Life.

The State Board of Education is responsible for supervising and managing the Vermont Department of Education and the Vermont public school system. It consists of eight adult and two student members appointed by the governor. Student members are appointed to two-year terms and become full voting members in their second year. Elizabeth Strano joins ranking student representative Robert Kelley of Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, who replaces outgoing board member Alex Melville of Woodstock Union High School as the student voting member.
