Vermont lawyer Michael Wool becomes chair of New England Board of Higher Education

Vermont lawyer Michael Wool became chair of the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) at the board's annual spring meeting.

A native Vermonter, Wool has practiced law in Burlington since 1972. He provides tax and strategic advice in contexts ranging from family business matters to complex interstate and multinational transactions. He has served on several civic boards, including the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington. Wool succeeds former Maine state Sen Emily Cain, who stepped down as NEBHE chair to run for a seat in the US Congress. Established in 1955 by six visionary New England governors and authorized by the U.S. Congress, NEBHE brings together leaders in education, government and business to forge partnerships and advance ideas that enhance the economy and quality of life in the six-state region and beyond.

The regional compact works across the New England states to: help leaders assess, develop and implement education practices and policies of regional significance; promote regional cooperation and programs that encourage efficient sharing of education resources; and strengthen the relationship between higher education and the New England economy.

"Mike Wool has a strong interest in higher education and has been a champion of partnerships, programs and strategies to help individuals become college- and career-ready," said NEBHE President and CEO Michael K. Thomas. "His leadership, enthusiasm and experience will be great assets to NEBHE throughout his service as chair."

Among key NEBHE initiatives:

The New England Regional Student Program, established in 1957, saves New England residents millions of dollars on their annual tuition bills when they pursue specialized academic programs at out-of-state public colleges and universities in the region.

Professional Development Programs include problem-based learning instructional resources and professional development in STEM, focusing on sustainable technologies and advanced manufacturing.

The New England Journal of Higher Education (NEJHE) has been the authority on higher education trends and analysis in New England and beyond for more than 25 years.

NEBHE's Policy and Research team provides timely information and policy research to inform decision-makers and the public about issues relating to higher education and workforce development throughout New England.

NEBHE Conferences engage education, government and business leaders on subjects such as the economic development role of colleges and universities; college completion; innovations in teaching and learning; institutional productivity and higher education funding models.

Since 1955, the New England Board of Higher Education has promoted greater educational opportunities for the residents of New England. Our core functions include programs and services focused on cost savings and affordability and college access and success. We also provide policy leadership on key issues related to education and promote dialogue, research and analysis, and best practices related to education and the New England economy.
