Pablo Shiladitya Bose has been named by the University of Vermont Alumni Association as the 2021 recipient of the George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award. Bose is an associate professor in the Department of Geography, a Gund fellow, and director of the Global and Regional Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont.
Each year, the Kidder Award honors one full-time University of Vermont faculty member for excellence in teaching and extraordinary contributions to the enrichment of campus life. Established in memory of George V. Kidder, UVM Class of 1922, this prestigious award has been presented annually since 1974. The late George Kidder served the university for more than 70 years, including as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
“I can say without hesitation that Dr. Bose is one of the most impactful and effective teachers and mentors I have encountered,” said UVM Professor Cheryl Morse. “Pablo continues to expand his suite of courses from critical studies of media and environment, to regional studies of India, to the global geographies of sport, and geographies of race in the US. As a scholar he has deepened our understandings of the relationships between scale, space, and place in the resettlement of global refugees. Just as he motivates students to move beyond their own borders, Dr. Bose continually presses beyond his own.”

Bose is a passionate and award-winning interdisciplinary teacher whose research focuses primarily on issues of culture, space, and power. He is interested in diverse environments, refugee resettlement in non-traditional destinations, environmental displacement and advocacy, food and migration, transnationalism, and diasporas. A well-respected campus leader, Bose serves in a variety of roles in the department, college and university. Bose is recognized by the community as an incredibly supportive mentor, advisor, and research supervisor who has a great impact upon his students and maintains relationships with them well beyond graduation. In addition to his pedagogical success, Bose is nationally respected as a scholar and a sought-after speaker. He has presented his work and participated as a panelist at UVM and nationally.
Bose earned a B.A. in English from the University of British Columbia in 1995, an M.A. in communications from Simon Fraser University in 2000 and a Ph.D. in environmental studies from York University in 2006. He has taught at the University of Vermont for 13 years.
The UVM Alumni Association and previous Kidder Award recipients plan to honor Bose in the fall of 2021.
