Susan Evans McClure, executive director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, has been named executive director of the Vermont Arts Council, the state’s primary provider of funding, advocacy and information for the arts in Vermont, effective May 8. She succeeds Amy Cunningham, who has been serving as interim executive director since October and will return to her role as deputy director.
In her new role, Evans McClure will lead the organization’s efforts to expand arts opportunities, cultivate creative placemaking and energize the creative economy across Vermont.
“Susan brings a wealth of experience to her work as the arts council’s next executive director,” said Rebecca McMeekin, chair of the council's board of trustees. “That experience, combined with her energy, commitment to diversity, and connections with the nonprofit and business communities in Vermont, will enrich the council’s work as it moves forward under new leadership.”
Evans is a graduate of McGill University in Montréal and holds a Master of Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She is chair of the board of directors at the Addison County Economic Development Corporation and a trustee for the Carpenter-Carse Library in Hinesburg.
