Vermont Business Magazine New data shared by U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) shows Vermont households have been forced to spend at least $3,700 more on everyday essentials because of the Trump Administration’s reckless economic policies.
Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee, under the leadership of Ranking Member Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), found the average household in the United States has spent thousands more since the president took office last year. Inflation, President Trump’s tariffs, and the war in Iran have raised the cost of housing, energy, groceries, and health care.
“Working families in Vermont can’t afford President Trump’s economic policies—they’re a complete disaster. Throughout his campaign and well into his second term, the president vowed to end inflation and make America affordable again, but it was just another broken promise,” said Welch), Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Credit. “I hope this new data is the wake-up call my colleagues across the aisle need: it’s time we work together to bring prices down and make Washington work for everyday people—not the other way around.”
In Vermont, the average family has spent $947 more on housing costs; $472 more on gas; $310 more on groceries; $218 more on heating oil; and $120 more on electricity. Many families saw their ACA health care premiums rise over 50% on average after Republicans refused to extend the ACA’s premium tax credits. Nearly 5,000 in Vermont lost food assistance since the enactment of President Trump’s tax bill.

As of June 2026, the average household in the United States has had to spend $3,500+ more on goods and services under President Trump. Despite President Trump’s repeated pledges on the campaign trail that his administration would “end inflation” and bring down costs for families, Trump and Republicans in Congress have instead caused costs to continue to rise significantly, including through Trump’s reckless tariffs and war in Iran.
