AGC says its poll has found that 80 percent of voters want Congress to make sure it invests as much or more than currently is being spent on roads, bridges and transit systems.
Vermont Business Magazine The Associated General Contractors of Vermont (AGC/VT) is joining AGC of America in highlighting the results of a major national public opinion survey that demonstrates overwhelming bipartisan support for continued investment in America’s transportation infrastructure. The survey, commissioned by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), found that 78 percent of voters want Congress to pass a new federal highway, bridge, and transit funding bill before current funding authorization expires on September 30. Additionally, 80 percent of respondents support maintaining or increasing current levels of transportation investment.
The survey of more than 10,000 voters nationwide underscores what construction professionals see every day: transportation infrastructure is essential for public safety, economic growth, workforce development, and community prosperity. The poll also found that a majority of Americans have recently experienced roadway or bridge-related issues, while strong support exists for enhanced highway work zone safety measures to better protect construction workers.
AGC/VT strongly supports AGC of America's efforts to advance a long-term, fully funded federal transportation bill and commends AGC National for launching the America’s Moving Forward advocacy campaign to educate policymakers and the public on the importance of sustained infrastructure investment.
“The findings of this survey confirm what Vermont contractors, businesses, and motorists already know, investment in transportation infrastructure is not a partisan issue; it is an economic necessity,” said Richard W. Wobby Jr., Executive Vice President of AGC Vermont. “Our members build and maintain the roads, bridges, and transportation systems that connect communities and support commerce across Vermont and throughout the nation. AGC of America has been a tireless advocate for infrastructure investment, and AGC Vermont proudly stands alongside our national association in calling on Congress to pass a new long-term transportation funding bill that promotes safety, supports jobs, and strengthens our economy.”
AGC of America’s survey also found that approximately three-quarters of voters support additional safety measures in highway work zones, reflecting growing public recognition of the risks faced by transportation construction workers every day.
“Transportation infrastructure is one of the foundations of a strong economy and a high quality of life,” said Gerry Otis, President of AGC Vermont. “Whether it is moving goods, connecting rural communities, supporting tourism, or providing access to jobs and healthcare, reliable transportation systems benefit every Vermonter. We appreciate AGC of America’s leadership on this issue and encourage Congress to continue making transportation investment a national priority.”
The survey results come as Congress considers the next phase of federal transportation authorization legislation. AGC of Vermont along with AGC of America report that its advocacy efforts have already helped generate more than 30,000 messages to members of Congress supporting timely passage of a new transportation bill.
AGC Vermont remains committed to working with AGC of America, state and federal policymakers, and industry stakeholders to ensure that infrastructure funding remains predictable, sustainable, and focused on improving safety, mobility, and economic opportunity for all Americans.
