Auditor staff received highest possible result in peer review

External teams of auditors from other states review the Auditor’s office’s work every three years to ensure audits strictly adhere to generally accepted government auditing standards

Vermont Business Magazine State Auditor Doug Hoffer announced today that his office received the highest possible rating from an external team of auditors who assessed the Auditor’s office’s adherence to generally accepted government auditing standards (GAGAS). Audit offices can receive a score of Pass, Pass with deficiencies, or Fail based upon the review. Vermont received a Pass score.

“The terminology used by the peer review team from National State Auditors Association doesn’t really do justice to what the result means. A score of ‘Pass’ means that our team has conducted their work to the highest possible standards of rigor and objectivity, and that we have systems in place to ensure that our audit work is based solely on the facts,” said Hoffer.

“Vermonters who see our audit reports are likely unfamiliar with the work that occurs behind the curtains, so to speak,” Hoffer added. “Literally every sentence in our reports is combed over first by the audit team and then an-house reviewer to make sure every statement is supported by documentary evidence. As a result of this quality control approach, the facts we present can’t be debated.

“The peer review team was extremely impressed with the work performed by the team in our office. They observed what I’ve known for fourteen years – that we have a top notch crew.”
