Vermont Business Magazine The WheelPad StudioPAD modular home on display at the Community Services of Addison County (CSAC) offices in Middlebury is a demonstration of affordable, inclusive, universally accessible housing design made possible by a collaborative public-private partnership of multiple organizations and the State of Vermont.
ADUs: A solution to housing in the backyard
Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, are small, fully functional secondary homes located on the same property as a main home. As affordability, availability, and multi-generational living accelerate the need for housing in Vermont and nationally, ADUs are filling a vital need where independent housing has proved scant or expensive.
WheelPad’s modular homes are distinguished from others by Vermont design and manufacturing, energy efficiency, low VOC non-toxic materials, and universal accessibility designed beyond minimum compliance for meaningful usability by people of all ages and abilities.
A Collaborative Partnership
WheelPad received funding from the Vermont Low Income Trust for Electricity (VLITE) and Projects for Housing Accessibility and Training (PHAT) to design and prototype its first ADU, the StudioPAD modular accessible home, at its Wilmington, Vermont, manufacturing facility. Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation (BDCC) has supported WheelPad’s growth, helping the company expand accessible housing solutions for Vermonters through financing, partnerships, and long-term business development support. Together with VEDA and state partners, BDCC is helping WheelPad create jobs, grow manufacturing capacity, and make it easier for people to live comfortably in their communities.
CSAC’s services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which pairs affordable housing with supports, received funding from the Vermont Department of Disabilities Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) to purchase two WheelPad accessible modular homes.
