AOT road construction report for the week of May 18

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of May 18, 2026.

Interstates:  

Bethel-Brookfield, I-89 Paving – Fine-milling operations continue southbound Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m., weather permitting. Work will pause from Friday 5/22 until Tuesday 5/26 at 6 a.m. to observe the Memorial Day holiday. Motorists should expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and temporary lane closures on I-89 with speed reductions to 55 mph within any active construction areas. 

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – In preparation for final paving, motorists will encounter Exit 8 on/off ramp closures Sunday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Exit 9 on/off ramp closures Monday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be minimal daytime delays Wednesday through Friday. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph, and fines will be doubled. 

Newbury-Ryegate, I-91 Paving – Paving operations begin on I-91 North between Exits 16 and 17. Temporary single-lane closures and a speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. Crews will be off the road by noon Friday for the holiday.  

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – Work continues on I-89 near Exit 3 with crossovers in place until fall 2027. The speed limit is 55 mph with a 15-foot width restriction in both directions on I-89. VT 107 traffic will be diverted during ongoing work. The speed limit on VT 107 is 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under Bridge 26S.  

Westminster, I-91 Bridge Replacement  Crews will rehabilitate drainage on the bridges. I-91 at mile maker 31 (Bridge 21N and 21S) will have daily lane closures. Southbound low-speed and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Crews will be off the roadway by noon on Friday for the holiday weekend.  

State Highways: 

Addison, VT 17 Paving – Milling will wrap up early in the week. Guard rail work will start on Monday, and shoulder berm removal starts on Tuesday. Motorists should expect delays Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

Barre-East Montpelier, VT 14 Resurfacing – Guardrail, paving, and shoulder work will continue on VT 14. Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., multiple work zones with single-lane closures and alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

Barre Town, Railroad Crossing Improvements  A railroad crossing improvement project continues on Quarry Hill Road between Fisher Road and Cherrywood Drive. Quarry Hill Road is reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers or temporary traffic signals. Motorists should expect delays.    

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  A peanut roundabout construction project continues. College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Ln) remain closed at VT 67A through late May, with traffic maintained via detour routes. Roadway signs direct drivers through the detour route.    

Bennington, Bridge 6 Replacement (VT 9/Main Street) – VT 9/Main Street remains closed between Morgan and Beech Streets through early June for a bridge replacement. A signed detour is in place. Beech Street and Morgan Street also remain closed at their intersections with VT 9/Main Street, with no access to the main roadway.   

Berlin, U.S. 302 Paving – This Maintenance District nighttime paving project begins at the Barre City line and moves towards the Montpelier town line. Work hours are 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Expect delays and one-lane alternating traffic.   

Brattleboro, VT 9 Paving – Paving and milling are scheduled for VT 9 between the I-91 Exit 2 interchange and the Edmund Heights intersection. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, single-lane closures with alternating traffic controlled by flaggers will be present. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. 

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Paving – This paving project is reaching completion. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, a mobile work zone will be present. Uniformed Traffic Officers will provide a follow-along vehicle and may direct alternating traffic patterns through short lane closures, as needed.  

Brattleboro-Putney, U.S. 5 Resurfacing – Guardrail work is scheduled. Between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., single-lane closures will be in place and alternating traffic patterns will be controlled by flaggers. Motorists should anticipate delays. A single-lane closure is also scheduled for bridge maintenance on U.S. 5 in Brattleboro. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone on the bridge over the West River south of the Spring Tree Lane intersection. 

Colchester, I-89 Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange – Sunday evening through Friday morning, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View will have lane closures with traffic shifted for milling and boxcutting work. Early next week, South Park Drive will be reduced to a single lane at night with access maintained. Thursday night, the I-89 southbound off-ramp at Exit 16 will be fully closed for milling and boxcutting. I-89 southbound traffic will be detoured to exit the interstate at Exit 17 to U.S. 2 east, to U.S. 2/7 south. Monday morning through Friday at noon, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View and from Hercules Drive north will have lane closures for roadway maintenance and traffic signal work. Early next week, Highgate Center will be reduced to a single lane with access maintained. U.S. 2/7 and the I-89 South off-ramp will be reduced to gravel surface until temporary pavement and line striping can be installed Thursday night into Friday afternoon. Motorists should expect significant delays and rough conditions. Please drive slow, be alert, and consider alternate routes. 

Colchester-Essex, VT-15 Paving – For this resurfacing project between the Colchester/Winooski town line and Susie Wilson Road on VT-15, motorists can expect slow-moving two-way travel Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. 

Derby, U.S. 5 and Alt. U.S. 5 Paving – Utility structure work and pavement markings are scheduled for Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures and in the intersections as needed. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. Crews will be off the road by noon on Friday.  

Derby-Newport, VT 191 Resurfacing – Paving operations continue on VT 191. Single-lane closures will be in place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns and intersections as needed. Crews will be off the road by noon on Friday.  

Elmore, VT 12 Bridge #90 Replacement – Crews will start work on the subfooting and footing for the abutment. Traffic on VT 12 near the North Branch Cascades Trail will be one lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by a temporary signal outside of work hours. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph through the project area.   

Elmore, VT 12 Bridge #94 Replacement – Crews will install sheeting to support the abutments of the temporary bridge. Traffic on VT 12 near Camp Road will be one lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph through the project area.  

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge.    

Milton, U.S. 7 Intersection Reconfiguration – Construction of the new Keelty Crossing will continue. Traffic impacts will remain minimal, with a shoulder closure on the south side of U.S. 7. Crews and equipment may be present near the roadway, with signage and occasional flaggers in place to guide motorists. Trucks will be entering the green from Middle Road.    

Northfield, VT 12 Retaining Wall Replacement – Temporary single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place throughout the project limits while the contractor installs a permanent lane closure. By the end of the week, the southbound lane of VT 12 near the intersection with Town Highway 54 will be permanently closed for about 500 feet and a temporary traffic light will be installed. This new traffic configuration will be in place until the end of the construction season.  

Norton, VT 114 Bridge Replacement – The contractor will be activating traffic signals and reducing the roadway to a single lane this week. Motorists should be aware that the pavement in the project limits will be removed, and the roadway will be excavated. Motorcycles should use caution when traversing the work zone.  

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect delays on U.S. 7 to allow for alternating one-way travel along with intermittent closures of the intersections of Oxbow Road, Arch Street, and VT Route 3.  

Plymouth, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Lane closures with flaggers will continue throughout the week as crews mobilize equipment and materials to the bridge site. Two-way traffic will be restored during non-working hours. No lane closures will be in effect during the Memorial Day weekend from 12 p.m. Friday 5/22 to 7 a.m. Tuesday 5/26.  

Poultney, TH 1 (South Street) Bridge Rehabilitation – Demolition and excavation at the south abutment will continue as crews prepare the area for stone work. Traffic remains shifted to the one-lane temporary bridge, which is open to truck traffic. Temporary signals direct vehicles through the site with flaggers as needed during construction operations and truck movements. Drivers should use caution through the work zone.  

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, crews will continue work on the abutment formwork, reinforcing steel, and pier foundation for the new bridge. The temporary bridge continues to carry travelers over the river.  

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will conduct paving, curb work, and bioretention pond excavation at the northwest corner of the VT 2A and Industrial Ave intersection, and saw cutting and roadway widening on the east side of VT 2A between Sharon Drive and River Cove Road. On weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., the VT 2A northbound lane between Sharon Drive and River Cove Road will be closed, with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. On weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., the southbound right turn lane from VT 2A onto Industrial Avenue will be closed. Motorists should expect major traffic delays and plan for extra travel time or seek alternate routes.  

Wolcott, School Street Bridge Replacement – The bridge on School Street remains closed to all traffic with a signed detour in place. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., traffic at the intersection of VT 15 and School Street will be controlled by flaggers. 

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge Replacement – Crews will continue paving activities on the bridge on VT 12 over Hardwood Brook. The roadway will be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic control by flaggers Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
