AOT Road Construction Report for the week of May 11 

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of May 11, 2026.

Interstates:

Bethel-Brookfield, I-89 Paving – Fine-milling operations continue southbound, working south towards Randolph. Crews will work Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Motorists should expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and temporary lane closures on I-89 North and South with speed reductions to 55 mph. 

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – In preparation for final paving, motorists will encounter Exit 8 on/off ramp closures Monday and Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Exit 9 on/off ramp closures Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph, and fines will be doubled.    

Newbury-Ryegate, I-91 Paving – Paving operations and shoulder clean-up are scheduled for I-91 North between Exits 16 and 18. Temporary single-lane closures will be in place for multiple work zones, shifting between the high- and low-speed lanes as work progresses. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – Work continues on I-89 near Exit 3. Crossovers are now open until fall 2027. Northbound traffic uses the low-speed lane. Southbound traffic crosses over to I-89 northbound, travels across Bridge 26N, then returns to I-89 southbound. The Exit 3 southbound on-ramp merges onto the north crossover with a 55 mph speed limit and 25 mph advisory speed for the sharp turn. Speed limit is 55 mph with a 15-foot width restriction in both directions on I-89. VT 107 traffic will be diverted during bridge railing and snow fence removal. Speed limit on VT 107 is 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under Bridge 26S. 

State Highways: 

Barre-East Montpelier, VT 14 Resurfacing – Guardrail and shoulder work will continue. Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., multiple work zones will be in place with single-lane closures and alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

Barre Town, Railroad Crossing Improvements  A railroad crossing improvement project continues on Quarry Hill Road between just north of Fisher Road and south of Cherrywood Drive. Quarry Hill Road is reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, controlled by flaggers during the day and temporary traffic signals at night. The roadway may be open to two-way traffic as conditions allow. Motorists should expect delays.    

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews continue drainage work and constructing the VT 67A splitter islands. College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Ln) remain fully close at VT 67A through June, with traffic maintained via detour routes. Roadway signs direct drivers to continue southbound on VT 67A, onto VT 279 eastbound, onto U.S. 7 northbound and exit at Exit 2 in Bennington. Drivers then turn onto VT 7A southbound, onto Rice Lane, onto Matteson Road. To reach College Drive, drivers continue north on Matteson Road onto Harlan Road onto Jennings Drive and back onto College Drive.     

Bennington, Bridge 6 Replacement (VT 9/Main Street) – VT 9/Main Street remains closed between Morgan and Beech Streets for a full bridge replacement through early June. A signed detour is in place. Beech Street and Morgan Street also remain closed at their intersections with VT 9/Main Street, with no access to the main roadway. The Buck Stop Mini-Mart, gas station, and TenneyBrook Car Wash remain accessible via Beech Street.   

Brattleboro, VT 9 Paving – Milling is beginning for a night paving project on VT 9 at the Edmund Heights intersection progressing east to the I-91 Exit 2 interchange. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be present. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Paving – A night paving project is finishing final work items throughout downtown Brattleboro on U.S. 5, VT 9, and VT 30. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, a mobile work zone will be present. Uniformed Traffic Officers will provide a follow-along vehicle and may direct alternating traffic patterns through short lane closures, as needed.  

Brattleboro-Putney, U.S. 5 Resurfacing – Paving will continue north on U.S. 5 from Dummerston to Putney. Between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., a single-lane closure will be in place and may change throughout the day to a maximum distance of 1.5 miles. Alternating traffic patterns will be controlled by flaggers. This work zone will alternate between the northbound and southbound lanes. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should expect delays.  

Colchester, I-89 Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange – Sunday evening through Saturday morning from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. there will be nightly lane closures along the west side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic shifted to the east side for milling, boxcutting, and temporary paving. The west side of U.S. 2/7 will be reduced to gravel starting Sunday evening through Saturday morning. Monday morning through Friday afternoon, from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m., intermittent lane closures along either side of U.S. 2/7 at its signalized intersections with South Park Drive, the interstate ramps, Mountain View Drive, Hercules Drive, and Rathe Road for the installation of mast arm foundations. Motorists should expect significant delays and rough conditions. Please drive slow, be alert, and consider alternate routes.  

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements – On Monday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., crews will finish installing wrong-way driving detection on the I-89 Exit 17 off-ramps under lane width reductions and shifts. After Monday, crews will be off-site until June. 

Colchester-Essex, VT-15 – For this resurfacing project between the Colchester/Winooski town line and Susie Wilson Road on VT-15, motorists can expect slow-moving two-way travel Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.  

Derby, U.S. 5 and Alt. U.S. 5 Paving – Milling operations will continue for this paving project in the village of Derby Line on Monday and Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures and in the intersections as needed. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

Derby-Newport, VT 191 Resurfacing – Paving and guardrail operations continue on VT 191. Flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. In areas where three lanes of travel are present, temporary lane shifts around active work zones will allow a single lane of travel in either direction. Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present and may direct traffic in the U.S. 5 intersection as needed. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.   

Elmore, Bridge #90 Replacement – Crews are continuing excavation work for the channel and cofferdam for the new structure. VT 12 near the North Branch Cascades Trail will be one lane of alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by a temporary signal outside of work hours.  

Elmore, Bridge #94 Replacement – Construction will resume for the temporary bridge. Traffic on VT 12 near Camp Road will be one lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge.     

Milton, U.S. 7 Intersection Reconfiguration – Construction of the new Keelty Crossing will continue. Traffic impacts will remain minimal, with a shoulder closure on the south side of U.S. 7. Crews and equipment may be present near the roadway, with signage and occasional flaggers in place to guide motorists. Trucks will be entering the green from Middle Road.   

Northfield, VT 12 Retaining Wall Replacement – Shoulder closures will be in place on VT 12, VT 64, Old Mill Hill, and Lovers Lane in South Northfield for the installation of construction approach signs. Flaggers will facilitate alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures in areas where the shoulder is too narrow.  

Pittsford, Bridge Replacement, U.S. 7 – Motorists should expect delays on U.S. 7 to allow for alternating one-way travel along with intermittent closures of the intersections of Oxbow Road, Arch Street, and VT Route 3.  

Plymouth, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Starting Monday 5/11, daily lane closures with flaggers will be in place as the contractor mobilizes equipment and materials, installs erosion control measures and construction signage, and begins channel excavation work. Two-way traffic will be restored during non-working hours. Drivers should expect delays and use caution through the work zones.  

Poultney, Bridge #4 Rehabilitation – Excavation at the south abutment and hauling soil to an approved site will continue. Traffic remains shifted to the one-lane temporary bridge, which is open to truck traffic. Temporary signals and flaggers will continue to guide vehicles safely through the work zone. 

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Crews will continue work on the abutment formwork, reinforcing steel, and pier foundation for the new bridge over the Deerfield River. The temporary bridge continues to carry travelers over the river.  

Troy, VT 243 Resurfacing – Paving operations are scheduled for VT 243 on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flaggers will facilitate alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures from just south of the Canadian border to the intersection with Dominion Avenue.   

Troy, VT 243 and VT 105 Paving – Milling operations are scheduled on VT 105 and VT 243 through North Troy. Wednesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through single-lane closures. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.   

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will conduct grading, paving, and driveway apron work on the west side of VT 2A between Industrial Avenue and Hillside Drive, bioretention pond excavation at the VT 2A and Industrial Ave intersection, and saw-cutting, roadway widening and sewer installation on the east side of VT 2A between Mountain View Road and Bittersweet Circle. On weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., the VT 2A northbound lane between Mountain View Road and Bittersweet Circle will be closed, with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. On weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., the southbound right turn lane from VT 2A onto Industrial Avenue will be closed. Motorists should expect major traffic delays and plan for extra travel time or seek alternate routes.   

Wolcott, Bridge #6 Replacement – Bridge #6 on School St remains closed to all traffic. A signed detour is in place to guide motorists to Flat Iron Road and VT 15. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic at the intersection of VT 15 and School Street will be controlled by flaggers.  

Worcester Bridge #89 Replacement – Crews will continue paving activities on the VT 12 bridge over the Hardwood Brook. Motorists should expect a single lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
