House passes Vermont Voter Protections Act

Vermont Business Magazine Today, Speaker Jill Krowinski made the following statement on the House passage of S.298, an act relating to creating the Vermont Voter Protections Act. The bill had previously passed the Senate in a 28-0 roll call vote.

“Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass S.298, which creates the Vermont Voting Rights Act,” said Speaker Krowinski. “This bill comes at a crucial moment. Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision that further weakens the Voting Rights Act - another example of voting rights coming under attack in this country. While other states are working to make access to voting more difficult, Vermont is continuing to lead the way in making voting more accessible, secure, free, and fair.

“This bill builds stronger protections for voters and creates penalties for those who attempt to interfere or intimidate whatsoever with our democratic process. It expands upon this year’s S.23 (now Act 75), an act relating to the use of synthetic media in elections, H.541, an act relating to interference with voters and election officials, and H.686, an act relating to expanding identification of certain lobbying advertisements.

“I want to thank our diligent House Committee on Government Operations and Military Affairs for their meticulous work on this bill. There is a great amount of anxiety around our fundamental right to vote, and the Vermont House of Representatives will continue to do everything in our power to increase access and protect Vermonters' right to vote.”
