Copley Hospital Lab achieves prestigious CAP re-accreditation

Vermont Business Magazine Copley Hospital is proud to announce that its laboratory has once again earned accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This globally recognized gold standard distinction affirms the laboratory’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of quality, precision, and patient safety.

The two-year accreditation follows a rigorous on-site inspection. A team of practicing laboratory and pathology professionals evaluated more than 4,000 checklist items, encompassing laboratory operations, quality control procedures, safety practices, staff qualifications, and overall management.

“The accreditation process is incredibly rigorous, requiring a comprehensive review of everything from our quality control data and safety protocols to the qualifications, skill, and expertise of our entire team,” said Amy Shopland, the laboratory director. “It speaks volumes about our staff that we meet these standards—our laboratory professionals bring a deep level of knowledge, precision, and commitment to excellence every single day, and this recognition reflects the high level of care they provide to our patients.”

Advancing Technology for Faster Results

This year’s accreditation was particularly significant as the department recently implemented major technological upgrades. The laboratory successfully integrated the new QuidelOrtho Vistros XT7600 analyzer and an integrated track system, designed to enhance both the speed and precision of testing.

Bringing these systems online required extensive staff training and the development of new workflows, all while the team managed a surging workload. Last year, the laboratory performed nearly 185,000 tests — an increase of nearly 35,000 over the previous year.

“Accreditation from CAP is a significant milestone that recognizes the dedication of our laboratory team to quality and precision,” said Armando Ciampa, MD, Copley Pathologist. “Our team works every day to deliver accurate, timely, and reliable results that support excellent patient care. Copley’s recent investments in advanced laboratory technology ensure we can continue delivering the high level of service our patients and providers depend on.”

A Community-Focused Resource

Copley’s laboratory provides a comprehensive suite of services, including:

  • Blood Bank

  • Chemistry & Hematology

  • Immunology

  • Microbiology

  • Pathology

This accomplishment highlights the direct impact of investing in advanced equipment and skilled professionals. By maintaining CAP standards, Copley Hospital ensures that local patients receive diagnostic accuracy on par with the leading medical institutions worldwide.

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and technical expertise of our entire laboratory staff,” said Joseph Woodin, CEO of Copley Hospital. “Earning CAP re-accreditation — especially during a period of significant technological growth — demonstrates our team's dedication to clinical excellence. We are committed to ensuring our community has access to the highest caliber of diagnostic services close to home, and this recognition confirms we are meeting that mission.”
