Keeping Access at its Core, the Community College of Vermont Adapts to Change
Vermont Business Magazine The Community College of Vermont (CCV) is the second-largest college in Vermont, serving nearly 10,000 students each year. This spring, close to 5,000 students are enrolled, marking a 5% increase compared with spring 2025. Alongside growth are changes in how students are accessing their education. As a statewide institution that keeps access as its north star, CCV is adapting in innovative ways.
CCV was a pioneer of remote learning, offering its first online class in 1996. The popularity of online classes has continued post-pandemic, and CCV has modified its offerings accordingly. Between fall 2019 and fall 2025, CCV saw a 69% increase in students choosing to take online courses, and a 59% decrease in students choosing to take in-person courses. A spectrum of attendance options in six different class formats provides access for a diverse student body.
CCV serves students at locations across Vermont, a design that continues to evolve. In 2024, CCV-Middlebury was invited to share space with the Vermont Community Foundation, and CCV-St. Johnsbury moved into a new space at the Fairbanks Museum in 2022; these changes strengthen partnerships and provide greater access to local communities. This spring, CCV will move out of brick-and-mortar buildings in Springfield and Morrisville and will provide access through both remote services and in-person outreach.
One of the hallmarks of a CCV education is its personalized advising model. As of spring 2026, advising has shifted from location-based to program-based. This enables students to engage with their academic and career goals earlier in their CCV journey, deepening their understanding of transfer opportunities and career pathways. It also recognizes that our students engage with us in many ways; nearly two-thirds of our students now access advising and financial aid services remotely.
CCV is Vermont’s second-largest college, serving nearly 10,000 students each year. With statewide locations and extensive online learning options, our students don’t have to travel far from their communities to access our degree and certificate programs, workforce, secondary and continuing education opportunities, and academic and veterans support services.
