This six-session program invites older adults to explore storytelling, video production, and local history through community media.
Vermont Business Magazine CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is offering a six-session Creative Aging workshop designed for Vermonters ages 60 and older who are interested in learning media production skills and sharing stories from their communities. No previous media production experience needed.
Held from April through June 2026, the course introduces participants to the power of community media as a tool for storytelling, connection, and civic engagement. The program combines hands-on training in video production with reflection on local history, community ethics, and the role of public access media.
Participants will explore the CCTV Archives, which document decades of community life in Vermont, and use historical footage as inspiration for creating original “Then and Now” stories that connect past and present perspectives.
Throughout the six sessions, participants will gain practical experience with camera work, interviewing, and studio production. They will collaborate in roles such as host, camera operator, and producer while learning the fundamentals of framing, storytelling, and working as part of a production team.
By the end of the program, participants will have developed technical skills, creative confidence, and new connections with fellow storytellers.
Workshop Schedule
The six-session course will be held at CCTV’s studio in Burlington on the following dates:
- April 21 – Welcome, introductions, tour of the studio, and exploration of the CCTV Archives
- May 5 – Introduction to the “Then and Now” storytelling project and basic camera skills
- May 19 – Studio production training and collaborative production roles
- June 2 – Interview techniques and live studio segment production
- June 16 – Creating community interview segments
- June 30 – Final project sharing, reflection, and celebration
Participants will work collaboratively on media projects, combining interviews and B-roll footage to create short stories that highlight community voices and perspectives.
This project is supported in part by the Vermont Arts Council, which receives support in part from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
Older adults interested in participating or learning more about the program are encouraged to sign up at bit.ly/cctv-creative or contact CCTV Media Educator Travis Washington at [email protected] or 802-862-3966 x333.
