Specialty license plate proposed to support soccer and outdoors

Vermont Business Magazine Treasurer Mike Pieciak, legislative leaders and Vermont Green FC held a press conference Thursday to unveil a legislative proposal (S.234) creating a state-sponsored Vermont Green FC license plate. The plates would be the latest addition to a series of personalized license plates offered for a fee through the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Revenues generated from Vermont Green FC license plates would support climate action, resilience, and outdoor recreation—priorities consistent with the club’s mission of using soccer as a catalyst for a more sustainable and equitable future.

Treasurer Pieciak characterized the proposal as both a win for Vermont Green FC and the State. "Vermont Green FC is a champion both on and off the pitch,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “They score spectacular goals and win exciting matches, but you can also count on them to show up and stand up for what is right.”

“These license plates would cement the club’s status as a team of Vermont’s future, strengthening the values we share across our state, and supporting the Vermont Advantage—our unique natural beauty, strong communities, and access to outdoor recreation.”

Vermont Green FC is a USL League Two club based in Burlington with a mission focused on social and environmental justice. In 2025, the club completed a miraculous undefeated season, winning its first USL League Two championship.

Treasurer Pieciak’s proposal would make a Vermont Green FC logoed license plate available for purchase, growing the club’s community of supporters and strengthening state pride—all while creating a new, ongoing non-tax revenue stream to support Vermont’s economic future.

“From day one, Vermont Green FC has been about more than soccer—it’s about building a better future for the state we are so lucky to call home,” said Patrick Infurna, Vermont Green FC Co-Founder. “We’re grateful to Treasurer Pieciak for approaching us with this idea and for being such a strong partner.”

Funds raised through the program would be managed by a board including the Treasurer’s Office, DMV, Vermont Green FC, the Climate Action Office, and the Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance.

“Vermont’s outdoor businesses share with Vermont Green FC a deep appreciation for Vermont’s natural beauty and recreation amenities,” said Kelly Ault, Vermont Outdoor Business Alliance's executive director. “VOBA is proud to be a partner with the Treasurer’s Office on the special fund that will shore up the state’s outdoor economy and local communities, an imperative to the vitality of our State.”

Representative Kate Lally is serving as the lead sponsor in the House. “Vermont is home to many unique organizations that not only strengthen the state’s economy but also stand for important causes. Right now, nobody is more emblematic of this than Vermont Green FC. A state license plate is a smart, values-driven way to strengthen the club’s footprint throughout the state, while supporting causes Vermonters care deeply about.”

In closing, Treasurer Pieciak emphasized that the State must continue to explore creative solutions that raise revenues without raising taxes on hardworking Vermonters.

“Costs are rising, Vermonters’ needs are greater than ever, and the state can no longer afford to rely on the federal government’s support,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “We must continue identifying innovative opportunities, like the Vermont Green FC license plates, that strengthen state pride and generate additional revenues without burdening taxpayers.”
