Vermont Business Magazine Ahead of National Unclaimed Property Day on February 1, Treasurer Pieciak is reminding Vermonters to search for their unclaimed property at missingmoney.com.
Unclaimed property includes lost checks, forgotten bank accounts, safety deposit boxes, and other financial property. Entities are required to annually turn these assets over to the State, and the Treasurer's Office safeguards them until claimed by rightful owners or their heirs.
Unclaimed property can belong to individuals, businesses, nonprofits, government entities, and more. The Treasurer’s Office currently holds over $150 million in unclaimed property—money Treasurer Pieciak says is essential to return to Vermonters.
“As Vermonters work harder than ever to make every dollar count, returning these funds is a top priority for our office,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “We’ve returned funds that have helped families keep their housing, supported veterans who served our country, and helped small businesses keep their doors open. I urge Vermonters to search for unclaimed property for themselves or a loved one—it’s quick, easy, and can make a real difference.”
In FY25, the Treasurer's Office returned nearly $10 million to Vermonters across 30,000 individual claims. Both were the most ever returned in a fiscal year. Despite this progress, a record-$24 million in unclaimed property was turned over to the State.
As the total amount of unclaimed property held by the State continues to rise, Treasurer Pieciak has created new programs and partnerships to reunite Vermonters with their missing money.
The Treasurer’s Office recently partnered with the Tax Department to implement the second year of MoneyBack—an annual program before the holiday season to mail unclaimed property checks to claimants whose identity and address can be verified by shareable Tax Department data.
In recognition of National Unclaimed Property Day (February 1), Treasurer Pieciak recently joined state treasurers across the country for a virtual unclaimed property search-a-thon. During the event, the Vermont State Treasurer’s Office was recognized for producing creative TV ads, featuring renowned former meteorologist Tom Messner, that have built legitimacy and awareness of the millions in forgotten funds waiting to be claimed.
“We often hear from Vermonters who think unclaimed property sounds too good to be true,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “In the Treasurer’s Office, we will continue finding creative ways to reach Vermonters to earn their trust so they can reclaim their hard-earned cash.”
