Dr. Peter A. Calabresi, professor and chair of neurological sciences in the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and University of Vermont Health, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, an organization that provides objective advice on health, health care and biomedical science.
Calabresi was recognized for his groundbreaking research on the front part of the eye's visual system. He used a special imaging technique called optical coherence tomography to diagnose, predict the course of, and study the causes of multiple sclerosis. His work showed that ongoing damage to the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) is a feature of MS that can be treated.
“Peter Calabresi’s work is changing the world for the better, improving and expanding therapies for those living with multiple sclerosis and elevating medical research in significant ways,” said UVM President Marlene Tromp. “The university is proud to see his contributions recognized by his election to the National Academy of Medicine, and we are thrilled to welcome his groundbreaking research, teaching and clinical service and leadership to our outstanding faculty community at UVM.”
