Attorney General Clark settles dispute with Angi over misleading marketing

Settlement Includes $100,000 Penalty to Be Paid by Company to the State

Vermont Business Magazine Attorney General Charity Clark announced a settlement with Angi, formerly known as Angi’s List, over concerns about misleading marketing on its online platform, which connects consumers with more than 300 Vermont contractors or service professionals.

Prior to 2025, Angi advertised participating Vermont residential contractors on its platform as “certified pros.” Vermont, however, does not have a “certification” process for contractors, and instead requires registration only under Title 26. Angi itself does not have a certification process and cannot confer, or vouch for, credentials of contractors using its platform. To resolve the State’s concerns, Angi has agreed to stop using the marketing term “Angi Certified Pro” and to pay the State $100,000.

“For most Vermonters, our homes are the single biggest investment we make,” said Attorney General Clark. “It’s vitally important that consumers are not misled by marketing terms that imply confidence or credentials that contractors do not have. I’m pleased with Angi’s willingness to stop using terms that conflict with, or confuse, Vermont law.”

The settlement announced today requires the company to do the following:

  • Angi must stop using the term “Angi Certified Pro” and/or any term that that implies a governmental credential;
  • The company must clearly and conspicuously direct or refer users to State resources to verify Vermont contractor credentials; and
  • Angi will contact all Vermont residential contractors in its system to alert them to their obligations to register with the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office of Professional Regulation pursuant to Title 26 (the residential contractor registration requirements).
  • Angi will also pay the State of Vermont $100,000.
