Sentenced individual at Southern State Correctional Facility died on Saturday morning
Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) today announced the death of Richard Davis, a sentenced individual incarcerated at Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF) in Springfield, Vermont.
Richard Davis, 78, of Orleans, Vermont, had been incarcerated since 1993.
At approximately 4:41am on the morning of September 27, a correctional officer found Mr. Davis unconscious in his cell. The officer notified medical staff and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and immediately began initiating life-saving measures. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and EMS pronounced Mr. Davis deceased at the facility.
Mr. Davis’s death does not appear suspicious at this time. The Department notified the Defender General’s Prisoners’ Rights Office and Vermont State Police of the death per state law and protocol. The DOC Corrections Investigative Unit will review the fatality according to departmental policy.
Per standard protocol for deaths involving inmates, a detective from the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations was assigned to the case and responded to the prison to begin an investigation. The death does not appear to be suspicious and is suspected to be the result of a medical event. Davis had been in custody since 1993 on charges of Kidnapping and Simple Assault.
