AOT Road Construction Report Week of Sept 8

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont beginning September 8, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.   

Interstates:   

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements – Crews will construct the Exit 17 southbound acceleration lane and northbound deceleration lane, continue to demolish and remove the existing U.S. 2 bridge abutments and roadway approaches, and install traffic signals on U.S. 2. From Monday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on I-89 southbound. The new Exit 17 southbound on-ramp from U.S. 2 westbound is open to traffic; the acceleration lane is still under construction. Drivers are advised to use caution and yield to I-89 southbound traffic until there is a safe gap in traffic before merging onto I-89 southbound. On U.S. 2 between U.S. 7 and Jasper Mine Road there will be daytime lane closures and intermittent alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorists should expect daytime delays on U.S. 2 and plan extra travel time.    

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. I-91 traffic remains reduced to a single lane in each direction about a quarter mile before the Exit 15 interchange. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the crossover that diverts southbound vehicles onto the northbound bridge around the work zone.  

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – Interstate-91 Southbound at Exit 16 is open to one lane of travel within the project area. A work zone speed reduction to 55 mph is in effect. Fines are increased for speeding within the work zone. 

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Crews continue with shoulder work and guardrail installation. Motorists should expect delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.   

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp.  Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. Traffic on VT 107 will be diverted due to painting operations, with a 30 mph speed limit and a 14-foot height restriction.    

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving operations continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Stormwater improvement work will progress at various locations. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces on I-89 South. 

State Highways:  

Barre Town–Orange–Topsham, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Motorists should expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic and moderate delays as paving of the wearing course is completed in Topsham and continues from Barre Town into East Barre. Nighttime paving of the roundabout is scheduled for 9/14, and driveway apron paving may also occur along the corridor. 

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Main Street and Beech Street. Utility crews will be working within the roadway limits during both daytime and overnight hours.   

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction – Crews will install curb and streetlight foundations along the north side of VT 67A and roadway approaches for College Drive and Matteson Road. From Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with intermittent stoppages for construction vehicles. College Drive and Matteson Road are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes, until approximately late September 2025.  

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project is continuing milling, pavement marking, and utility structure work on U.S. 5 (Canal Street and Main Street), VT 30 (Linden Street), VT 9 (Western Avenue and High Street) and VT 142 (Vernon Street). From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night through Saturday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through multiple work zones. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours. Pedestrians should be vigilant for sidewalk detours. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures and wet paint. 

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews may clean culverts and drainage inlets on VT 15 in Johnson. Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., flaggers may control alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 between VT 100C and Hillcrest Drive in Johnson. Crews will be off the roadway from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on VT 15 in the Village of Johnson. 

Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk Project – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., crews could be present on site a few days during the week. VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for cleanup work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.  

Fairlee, Lake Morey Road/I-91 Underpass Single-lane closures will be in place on Lake Morey Road during working hours while crews remove sub-decking and forms under the I-91 South bridge deck at Exit 15. Motorists should watch for alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers.  

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.     

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between the Hinesburg/St. George line and Tilley Drive continues with traffic control present Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas. Motorists should expect delays. 

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., VT 15 will be reduced to one lane intermittently during working hours. The lane that is closed is subject to switch quickly at times depending on what side of the road is being striped. Flaggers will be on site to assist traffic flow. Work is between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive, and VT 15 and Park Street.  

Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – Crews will be on site intermittently to complete remaining project tasks, with the possibility of alternating one-lane traffic during work hours.   

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing – Single-lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for daytime driveway apron paving, clean-up, and pavement marking operations Monday through Friday on this Class 1 paving project. Flaggers will control one-way alternating traffic patterns through daytime work zones. Motorists should watch for wet paint.  

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control present allow for construction vehicles in and out of the work area along with lane shifts on U.S. 7.    

Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – Daily lane closures will continue through next week as crews install asphaltic plug joints and finish final line striping, with traffic managed by a temporary signal and two-way flow restored after hours. Crews will also place shoulder material and conduct cleanup activities on site. The project will be largely complete by the end of next week, though some minor work may continue later in September and October. Drivers should proceed with caution, as workers remain near traffic until all work is finished.  

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, crews will continue assembling the 360-foot-long temporary bridge adjacent to Depot Street. Depot Street will be one lane controlled by flaggers, with 15 to 20-minute closures up to twice a day to accommodate launching of the bridge.     

Richmond, U.S. 2 Bridge Replacement For the final clean-up, traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with minimal traffic interruptions. 

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – U.S. 5 (Missing Link Road) has been reopened. A one-lane alternating traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals will be in effect for the next several weeks. The roadway width has been reduced to 10 feet wide. Minor to no delays expected.  

Thetford–Fairlee, U.S. 5 Paving – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic near active work zones as L&D finishes rumble strips and durable pavement markings, Vermont Rec completes guardrail delineators, and Pike works on remaining tasks and project cleanup. Crews will be on site Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no weekend work anticipated. Substantial completion may be granted next week if all work progresses as planned.  

Washington, VT 110 Bridge #15 Replacement Project – The contractor will continue with channel work along the stream bed, weather permitting. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts on VT 110 in the town of Washington as the contractor anticipates having alternating one-lane traffic patterns controlled by flaggers. Motorists are advised to use extra caution as the bridge is not paved and travel is on a gravel surface.  

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement Bridge work will continue as crews place the subbase for the sidewalk and curb installation and complete landscaping activities. Motorists should expect lane and shoulder closures on VT 100 northbound. Motorists should anticipate delays along VT 100 in Waterbury and at the intersection of Stowe Street. Flaggers and a Uniformed Traffic Officer will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.  

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will continue excavation and drainage installation on VT 2A between Meadowrun Road and Mountain View Road, and traffic signal work at the VT 2A and Industrial Avenue intersection. From Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., the VT 2A northbound left-turn-only lane onto Industrial Avenue will be closed. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on VT 2A between Meadowrun Road and Meadow View Road throughout the week, including the VT 2A and Industrial Avenue intersection. Motorists should expect daytime delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes.  

Woodstock, FAS Route 166/Pomfret Road, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – Pomfret Road is now open. The contractor will focus on site cleanup, using one-lane closures as needed.   

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement  Crews will begin placing concrete for the backwalls of the abutments and the wingwalls. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.   

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Crews will remove the temporary roadway and grade in preparation for paving. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on VT 12 over the new box culvert over Hardwood Brook. Flaggers may be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours. Motorists are asked to use caution while traveling through the work zone as surface conditions may change.
