Public scoping meeting scheduled for Hubbardton MU long range management plan

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department are developing a new long range management plan for the Hubbardton Management Unit. The public is invited to an in-person scoping meeting on Tuesday, September 9 to learn about the planning process and share input on the future use and conservation of these state lands. An online survey will offer an additional opportunity to submit comments between September 9 and October 9, 2025.

Situated within one of Vermont’s largest contiguous forest blocks and linking the Green Mountain National Forest with New York’s Adirondacks, the Hubbardton Management Unit consists of two parcels totaling 672 acres:

  • Hubbardton Battlefield Wildlife Management Area – 254.5 acres, accessed off Monument Hill Road in East Hubbardton.
  • Taconic Mountains Ramble State Park – 418 acres, accessed off St. John Road in East Hubbardton.

The management unit plays an important role in supporting wildlife movement and habitat connectivity alongside recreation opportunities. The State Park portion includes 4.5 miles of hiking trails and a Japanese Garden, and the Wildlife Management Area holds historic connections to the nearby Hubbardton Battlefield.

Long range management plans guide land management on state-owned lands for a 20-year period, balancing ecological, recreational, cultural, and economic values. Public scoping is an early step in the process, giving Vermonters the opportunity to share how they use and value these lands. Public input at this stage helps shape the first draft of the plan, which will be shared for further public comment before a final draft is adopted.
