VCBB sponsors Broadband Technician Apprenticeship/Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Community Broadband Board (VCBB) is sponsoring a new session of its Broadband Technician Apprenticeship/Pre-Apprenticeship Training in partnership with North Country Career Center. It will be comprehensive training for an entry level broadband network technician. The three-week course will be offered in Montpelier starting September 17 and is available to participants at no cost.

This is the fourth session of the training and is scheduled as Vermont is ready to make the final push on the state’s broadband buildout. An additional $229 million in federal funding from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program is on the way to the state, construction is scaling up, and more workers are needed.

“The Broadband Technician Pre-Apprenticeship Training has proven to be very successful and it’s in high demand. We’ve already put 14 Vermonters to work bringing broadband to their hometowns, families, and neighbors. Now we’re looking for more folks who want to start or pivot to a job that can lead to a variety of high-paying careers in technology,” said VCBB Executive Director Christine Hallquist.

The training will run Wednesdays through Saturdays 8:30-4:30. It will include OSHA 10, flagging, first aid, CPR, and will cover the safety aspects of working outside in remote areas. The training will also cover communication, teamwork, and leadership skills to help advance the participants' careers. All of this is on top of essential broadband skills, which include splicing testing, repairing fiber optic cables, and the basic physics of how broadband works. Bucket truck operations and how to operate this essential tool in a safe manner are also going to be covered. The final piece of this training will be pole climbing.

Employers who are interested in signing up for a lunchtime presentation to the participants, can reach out to Chris Damato at [email protected] to reserve a spot.

Participants who successfully complete the training will receive a stipend and tools to help them get started in the field. You can register for the training on our website.
