AOT Road Construction Report for the week of August 25

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 25, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.    

Interstates:   

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements  Crews will install traffic signals and streetlights during the day on U.S. 2 and begin demolishing and removing the exiting U.S. 2 bridge at night. From Sunday at 7 p.m. through Friday at 6 a.m., I-89 near the U.S. 2 bridge at Exit 17, including the Exit 17 northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp for U.S. 2 westbound traffic, will be closed nightly between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Traffic will be maintained via detour routes at Exit 16 along U.S. 2/7. I-89 and the Exit 17 ramps will be open during the day and on weekends.  

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. Traffic remains reduced to a single lane in each direction about a quarter mile before the Exit 15 interchange. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the crossover that diverts southbound vehicles onto the northbound bridge around the work zone. 

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – A full closure of I-91 South at Exit 16 is in effect until mid-week. All southbound traffic must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. The interstate is expected to reopen to one lane of traffic mid-week. A work zone speed reduction to 55 mph will be in effect. 

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Crews continue with shoulder work and guardrail installation. Motorists should expect delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.   

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp.  Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. Traffic on VT 107 will be diverted due to stripping and painting operations, with a 30 mph speed limit and a 14-foot height restriction.  

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving operations continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Final paving of the northbound ramps of Exits 21 and 22 will require narrowed and shifted lanes and motorists should be vigilant. Stormwater improvement work will be conducted off Exit 21 on VT 78. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.     

State Highways:

Barre Town–Orange–Topsham, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Motorists should expect multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic as paving of the wearing course continues from Barre Town to Orange. Other miscellaneous work may also occur along the project corridor.  

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Main Street and Beech Street. Utility crews will be working within the roadway limits during both daytime and overnight hours.  

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews will install curb and splitter roadway islands along the north side of VT 67A and roadway approaches for College Drive and Matteson Road. From Monday through Thursday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Friday, between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with intermittent stoppages for construction vehicles. College Drive and Matteson Road are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes, until approximately late September 2025.   

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project is continuing paving, line striping, and utility structure work on U.S. 5 (Canal Street and Main Street), VT 30 (Linden Street), and VT 9 (Western Avenue and High Street). Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane, and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through multiple work zones. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours throughout the work zones. Pedestrians should be vigilant for sidewalk detours. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures and wet paint. 

Brookfield, VT 14 Culvert Replacement – The road will be open to two-way traffic on Sunday. At the start of next week, traffic will be reduced to one lane as crews finalize work with line striping.  

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will install signage and pavement markings on VT 15 between Park Street in Johnson and the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge. From Monday through Thursday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., and on Friday, between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m., flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic, with significant traffic delays anticipated at the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout late next week. 

Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk Project – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., crews could be present on site a few days during the week. VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for cleanup work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.        

Highgate, U.S. 7 Stormwater Improvement Project One-lane alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be present on U.S. 7 just south of the Rock River while crews replace a headwall.  

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between the Hinesburg/St. George line and Tilley Drive continues with traffic control present Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to noon. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas. Motorists should expect delays.  

Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – One lane of alternating traffic will be in effect during work hours. Next week, the contractor will grind the deck, install plug joints, and apply line striping.  

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., VT 15 will be reduced to one lane intermittently during working hours. The lane that is closed is subject to switch quickly at times depending on what side of the road is being striped. Flaggers will be on site to assist traffic flow. Work is between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive, and VT 15 and Park Street.

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing Single-lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for multiple general work operations associated with the Class 1 paving project. Flaggers will control one-way alternating traffic patterns through daytime work zones.   

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control and lane shifts on U.S. 7. Thursday, motorists should expect one lane of alternating travel within the construction zone, expect delays. 

Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – Bridge #9 is now open, allowing travel along the full road. Daily lane closures will continue over the next few weeks for guardrail, membrane, and paving work, with traffic managed by a temporary signal and two-way flow restored after hours. No closures will be in effect during Labor Day weekend from 12 p.m. Friday 8/29 to 7 a.m. Tuesday 9/2. Drivers should proceed with caution as crews work near traffic and surfaces remain uneven until final paving.

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, crews will continue assembling the 360-foot-long temporary bridge adjacent to Depot Street. Depot Street will be one lane controlled by flaggers, with 15 to 20-minute closures up to twice a day to accommodate launching of the bridge.  

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – U.S. 5 (Missing Link Road) has been reopened. A flagged, one-way alternating traffic pattern may be in effect at times throughout the week. Minor to no delays expected. 

Rutland, Railroad Crossing – Railroad crossing signal work at West and Forest Street will require intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Monday through Thursday, between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., and on Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. 

Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Traffic remains open in both directions on the bypass road, with a reduced speed limit in effect through the work zone.  

Springfield, VT 11 Culvert Replacement  A culvert replacement project is almost complete. One-way alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place through the work zone a quarter mile west of the intersection with VT 106.   

Swanton, VT 78 Stormwater Improvement Project One-lane alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be present on VT 78 at various locations between Robin Hood Drive/Missisquoi Street and Lafar Street while crews work on headwalls, pipe cleaning, and the ditches adjacent to the roadway.  

Thetford–Fairlee, U.S. 5 Paving – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic near active work zones. No work is scheduled Monday–Wednesday. The contractor will install aggregate shoulder material on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Operations will stop at noon Friday for Labor Day weekend and resume on Tuesday 9/2 during normal work hours.   

Washington, VT 110 Bridge #15 Replacement Project – VT 110 between Pray Road and Poor Farm Road at Bridge #15 over an unnamed brook is closed and scheduled to reopen on or before Monday 8/25/25 at 7 p.m. The contractor will continue work related to the newly set up precast concrete structure next week, weather permitting. Motorists traveling northbound on VT 110 are expected to detour to VT 14 (in Royalton) to VT 107 to I-89 to Exit 6 onto VT 63 back to VT 14. Motorists are advised to adhere to all posted signage for detour routes. 

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – Bridge work will continue as crews install sewer lines, fine grade and pave the roadway, work on the curbs and sidewalks, and grade the slide slopes on Lincoln Street and Stowe Street. Lincoln Street and Stowe Street are scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic in the evening of Tuesday 8/26. The Lincoln Street signed detour will direct traffic to Perry Hill Road, Kneeland Flats Road, and Guptil Road. The Stowe Street signed detour will direct traffic along VT 100, U.S. 2, and Stowe Street. Following the reopening, motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on Lincoln Street and Stowe Street. Motorists should anticipate delays along VT 100 in Waterbury and are encouraged to plan accordingly.  

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will conduct sidewalk and driveway apron work on the north side of Industrial Ave, and pave shim on Industrial Ave and VT 2A between Meadowrun Road and Industrial Ave. From Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., the VT 2A southbound right-turn-only lane onto Industrial Avenue may be intermittently closed. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Industrial Avenue and on VT 2A between Meadowrun Road and Industrial Avenue. Motorists should expect daytime delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes. Crews will be off-site by 12 p.m. on Friday. 

Woodstock, FAS Route 166/Pomfret Road, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – Pomfret Road will remain closed this week, with a signed detour in place along Stimets Road. Motorists should use caution, as the detour is unpaved. The contractor will continue work on the bridge rail and strip the underside of the deck.

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews form and pour the concrete on abutment one and begin removing the existing culvert. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.  

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews continue to remove the temporary roadway and begin placing gravel for the new roadway. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary roadway over the new box culvert on VT 12 over Hardwood Brook. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours.
