AOT Road Construction Report for the Week of July 28

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 28, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.   

Interstates:

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements  Crews continue work on the new U.S. 2 bridge, Exit 17 on and off-ramps, and milling and paving on I-89 South near Exit 17. From Monday through Friday, I-89 South near Exit 17 will be reduced to a single lane. The southbound off-ramp width will be narrowed between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. U.S. 7 between the Shell gas station and Wiley Road will have lane shifts and shoulder closures, with two-way traffic maintained.   

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. A temporary crossover is in effect. Beginning approximately a quarter mile in advance of the Exit 15 interchange, traffic is reduced to a single lane in both directions and being diverted onto I-91 North. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect. 

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – A full closure of both southbound lanes at Exit 16 will be in effect beginning Saturday 7/26 for approximately 35 days. All southbound traffic will exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. Route 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee.   

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – In preparation for new pavement, crews are removing existing surface pavement and paving two separate courses of pavement. Motorists should expect major delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. Motorists should also expect uneven lanes and a milled surface in the travel lane. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.    

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit on VT 107 is reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction. 

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving and stormwater improvement projects continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Shifting traffic patterns and minor width restrictions will be in place for paving the ramps at Exit 21. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

State Highways:  

Barre Town–Orange–Topsham, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Guardrail, sign installation, and ditching will continue from Orange to Topsham, with curb work nearly completed around the East Barre roundabout. Motorists should expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic, minor delays, and changing traffic patterns at the roundabout to navigate work zones.   

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Crews will install temporary signal lights and work on utilities within the roadway limits. Intermittent daytime lane closures are expected. Motorists should plan for delays.   

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews will finish installing detour route signage and begin to excavate and install drainage infrastructure at the College Drive and Matteson Road intersections with VT 67A. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with the potential for periodic single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. On Tuesday, College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Lane) will fully close at VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes.   

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project continues, with milling and paving operations of side road intersections with VT 9 and U.S. 5 (Canal Street). Milling will begin on U.S. 5 (Main Street) at the intersection with Flat Street and progress north to the intersection with Park Place. The paving operation will continue on VT 9 between the I-91 Exit 2 interchange and the signalized intersection at U.S. 5. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night through Friday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours throughout the work zones. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures in the travel lanes and shoulders.  

Brattleboro-Hinsdale, VT/NH 119 New Bridge Construction – Motorists should watch for shifted lanes at either end of the new bridge while crews work on the expansion joints. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed.  

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will install rumble strips on VT 15 between Park Street in Johnson and the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic.     

Chelsea-Washington, VT 110 Resurfacing Project The contractor will be paving swale areas and the drive aprons in Chelsea Village early in the week, followed by the installation of plug joints on the bridges in Chelsea Village and the installation of traffic markings. All work is weather permitting. Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts on VT 110 in the town of Chelsea. 

Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk and Crosswalk Installation – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., crews are expected on-site only a few days during the week. VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for cleanup work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.  

Essex-Fairfax, VT 128 Paving – General project clean-up and the removal of temporary pavement markers will occur from Essex to Fairfax. No traffic impacts are anticipated. 

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.   

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between U.S. 2 and the Kennedy Drive intersection continues with traffic control present Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas.

Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – Browns Trace Road remains closed as bridge construction progresses. Crews will form and install rebar for the closure pour, continue roadway construction, and complete stone placement on the northwest side. Motorists should follow posted detour signs for alternate routes.  

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., crews will continue sidewalk preparation, grading, and placement. VT 15 will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during working hours between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive, and VT 15 and Park Street. 

Lowell, VT 100 Culvert Replacement – Monday through Friday on VT 100 between VT 58 and Lower Village Road traffic control will be present for daytime lane closures allowing for one lane of alternating travel to allow for work associated with the culvert replacement. 

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing – Daily lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for sidewalk work and paving associated with the Class 1 paving project. One-way alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers are in effect throughout all work zones. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed.   

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control on U.S. 7 to allow for truck traffic in and out of the work area.    

Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – The bridge over Pinney Hollow Brook, located approximately 4 miles north of VT 100 and 3 miles south of U.S. 4, is closed until August 18. VT 100A is open to the project limits from both directions, but the road is not passable end to end. A signed detour routes through traffic via VT 100 and US 4 through West Bridgewater. Travelers headed to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site or State Park should access from VT 100 in Plymouth Union. Updated signage is in place to help reduce confusion along the detour.    

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Construction of the temporary bridge piers continues. VT 100 will be reduced to one lane controlled by flaggers during the concrete placements of the pier foundations, expected on Monday 7/28 and Wednesday 7/30.        

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – A full closure of U.S. 5 will be in effect beginning Monday 7/28 for approximately 28 days. The traffic detour will utilize U.S. 5 to I-91 (between exits 6 and 7) and back to U.S. 5. The bicycle detour will utilize VT 103, Parker Hill Rd., O’Brien Rd, Alden Rd., and U.S. 5. 

Rutland, Railroad Crossing – Upgrades to the railroad crossing at West and Forest Street will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. 

Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Crews continue preparing deck formwork and reinforcing steel for a concrete pour. Traffic remains open in both directions on the bypass road, with a reduced speed limit in effect.  

Springfield, VT 11 Culvert Replacement  The 40-day closure of VT 11 continues while crews replace the culvert located a quarter mile west of the intersection with VT 106. A local, signed detour is available on Park Street. Trucks will need to follow the regional detour signs on VT 106, VT 10, and VT 103 around the work zone. Flaggers are positioned to assist with pedestrian and construction traffic entering and exiting the work zone. A new pedestrian access has been established, and pedestrians should stay on designated pathways through the work zone and remain vigilant. 

Thetford-Fairlee, U.S. 5 Paving – Paving and shoulder work will continue, moving south toward Thetford. Crews will be on-site Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with no weekend work expected. Motorists should expect uneven lanes, grooved pavement, alternating one-way traffic, and short delays in active work zones.  

Washington, VT 110 Bridge #15 Replacement Project – Crews will finish installing detour signs and will close VT 110 between Pray Rd. and Poor Farm Rd. at Bridge #15 over an unnamed brook on Tuesday 7/29 at 7 p.m. for approximately three weeks to perform the bridge replacement. The temporary structure will be removed, and excavation will begin. A temporary traffic detour will be required during the bridge closure. The state-signed detour will direct motorists along VT 110 to U.S. 302 to VT 14 back to VT 110. Motorists are advised to adhere to all posted signage for detour routes. 

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – Bridge work will continue as crews excavate and pour concrete for the remaining subfootings. The bridge on Stowe Street over Thatcher Brook will remain closed to all traffic for the 60-day closure. The signed detour will direct traffic along VT 100, U.S. 2, and Stowe Street. Motorists are asked to stay alert and not follow trucks while traveling through the work zone.   

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Milling and paving on Industrial Ave between Gail Terrace and VT 2A will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers mid-week, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic signal work at the intersection of VT 2A and Industrial Ave will require lane reductions and shifts Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and alternating one-way traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Milled surfaces are present on Industrial Ave and the intersection of VT 2A and Industrial Ave. Motorists should expect significant daytime delays and plan extra travel time. 

Woodstock, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – As part of the concrete deck replacement and minor roadway approach work on the bridge over Gulf Stream just north of the junction with VT 12, crews will continue work on formwork for the bridge deck and backwalls. The road remains closed, with a signed detour in place along Stimets Road. Motorists should use caution, as the detour route is unpaved.  

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews begin backfilling the new box culvert. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over Hardwood Brook. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours.     

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews excavate down to the bedrock for abutment one and begin placing the concrete for the subfooting. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.
