Vermont Business Magazine Saint Michael’s College has received a $240,736 grant from a private family foundation to launch a new Emergency Services Program, building on the College’s strong legacy in emergency medical services and the nationally recognized, student-run Saint Michael’s Fire and Rescue.
The new program, led by Kate Soons, Director of Health Sciences, will create academic degree and certification pathways that address growing workforce demands while expanding partnerships with regional emergency service providers.
“This program design is the culmination of two years of research on state and national workforce trends, strategic planning with state emergency management leaders, and academic program development,” said Gretchen Galbraith, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost at Saint Michael’s College. “There are critical shortages in these areas, and a four-year degree is vital to long-term career opportunities in emergency services and management.”
By combining undergraduate academic programs with embedded certifications and regional and statewide training opportunities, Saint Michael’s College is uniquely positioned to meet the pressing needs of Vermont and the broader region in emergency healthcare and disaster response. The program will also offer clear pathways into healthcare professions and emergency management leadership roles.
This initiative builds on the College’s commitment to health-related academic offerings. In 2018, Saint Michael’s introduced majors in Health Science and Public Health, responding to growing student interest and an evolving job market in health and wellness fields.
“Expanding programs to include certifications and advanced training is a natural next step in this high-demand area,” said President Richard Plumb. “In addition to serving Saint Michael’s students, these expanded offerings will reach a broader community and provide critical training, especially as we face more frequent and severe weather events.”
The new Emergency Services Program aligns with the College’s mission to prepare students for lives of purpose and service, while actively addressing the urgent needs of the communities it serves.
