
Curtin has served with the Burlington Fire Department for 23 years. He currently holds the position of Deputy Chief of Operations.
Vermont Business Magazine Today, Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced her intention to appoint Deputy Chief Michael Curtin as the next Fire Chief Engineer of the Burlington Fire Department.
Curtin joined the Burlington Fire Department as a firefighter in 2002. Throughout his more than two decades of service, Curtin has demonstrated capable leadership, serving in the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief, prior to his promotion to Deputy Chief of Operations in August 2024. Since 2005, he has also served as an instructor at the Vermont Fire Academy, where he has delivered course material and conducted live fire training burns for firefighters across the State of Vermont.
“I am proud to announce my intention to appoint Deputy Chief Michael Curtin to serve as the next Fire Chief Engineer of the Burlington Fire Department,” said Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak. “I have great confidence in DC Curtin’s leadership ability, and I know that his commitment to our City and our Fire Department will continue as he steps into this new role.”
Deputy Chief Curtin is currently pursuing Chief Fire Officer and Chief Emergency Medical Officer designations from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, as well as a Vermont Emergency Management Director certification from the Vermont Department of Public Safety.

Mayoral Appointments will be brought to the City Council at its June 2 meeting. If confirmed, Curtin would step into the role of Chief on July 1. Outgoing Chief Michael LaChance will continue to lead the department through the end of the fiscal year, June 30.
