Vermont Business Magazine The House Committee on Commerce and Economic Development and the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing & General Affairs will hold hearings on the Trump Administration tariffs and the impact on the Vermont economy and relations with Vermont’s Canadian partners.
“The impact of President Trump’s tariffs on the Vermont economy can be seen across our state and they are leaving businesses scrambling to retain customers and business partners,” said House Speaker Jill Krowinski. “Furthermore, the language that President Trump and his administration have used when talking about our Canadian neighbors is appalling. The United States and Canada have for centuries had a special relationship in supporting each other through the best of times and in the darkest of times. I would argue that the Vermont - Canada relationship is even more unique and closely held.”
"We are very concerned for our Vermont citizens and our Vermont business community with the extreme disruptions and financial losses that the President's tariffs have caused,” said Representative Michael Marcotte, Chair of the House Committee on Commerce and Economic Development. “We are also distressed with the way our friends, neighbors, and relatives to the north in Canada are being treated."
“Vermonters and Canadians share many things in common that it is often hard to tell us apart. From our love for the outdoors, our commitment and support for our unique communities, our perseverance to make it through cold, dark winters, and our belief that strong partnerships can form multi-generational relationships,” said Speaker Krowinski. “We even have a friendly maple syrup rivalry. The Trump tariffs have completely upended long held bonds with our Canadian friends and neighbors, but I refuse to believe that they cannot be repaired. I look forward to hearing the testimony taken today and examining ways in which we can be creative in working together and rebuilding our partnership.”
The hearing starts at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning and the proceedings can be viewed here.
