“I watched as the President swore an oath to uphold and protect the constitution. I won’t sit and watch him lie to the American people again.”
Vermont Business Magazine Today, Rep. Becca Balint (VT-AL) announces she will not attend President Trump’s joint address. She will instead join programming that will provide real time fact-checking, a Democratic pre-buttal and live reactions. She will join Senators Murphy, Schatz, Markey and Alsobrooks along with other elected leaders, political commentators, and Move On, an organization focused on mobilizing for political progress.
“I watched as the President swore an oath to uphold and protect the constitution. I won’t sit and watch him lie to the American people again,” said Rep. Becca Balint. “I attended the inauguration because I believe in the peaceful transfer of power, but Trump spewed lies, stoked division and fear and made no effort to unify our country. There is no doubt tonight’s presidential address will be more of the same. My conversation tonight will be the best way I can use my voice for Vermonters. They are sick of the lies and Trump’s complete and utter disregard for our constitution.”
The virtual conversation begins at 8:15pm and will include a pre-buttal to Trump's address, followed by a live chat feed during his speech at 9pm to fact-check and discuss in real-time.
The event can be live streamed from Rep. Becca Balint’s Youtube channel.
And on Tuesday, Balint sent this statement on Trump’s escalating trade war with some of our closest allies. The tariff’s going into effect today include a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy. China and Canada both have already imposed tariffs on U.S. goods today, retaliating immediately against the Trump administration’s decision to enact tariffs on imports from their countries.
“These tariffs will be devastating for Vermont. Let me be clear, Vermont families and businesses will feel the pain of this reckless decision. Already the uncertainty has hammered Vermont’s small business community and brought chaos to trade relations with our state’s number one trade partner, Canada. The harm will ripple throughout our economy, making everything from housing materials and heating bills to groceries more expensive. And Vermonters know we can’t afford to make housing more expensive and less accessible. Vermonters are disturbed by Trump’s disregard for our livelihoods just so he can play games to build his ego.”
