Burlington will  open emergency cold weather shelter on Monday, Feb. 17

In Partnership with CVOEO

Vermont Business Magazine Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced that the city will open a cold weather emergency shelter at the Miller Center at 130 Gosse Court in response to the dangerously cold weather forecasted this weekend.  After reviewing weather modeling in consultation with the City’s Emergency Management Director, officials have determined the forecasted temperature on Monday evening, February 17, meets the City’s criteria for operation of an extreme cold weather shelter.

Hours of operation will be 5:00 PM February 17– 8:00 AM February 18.  The National Weather Service is currently forecasting evening temperatures diving well-below zero with windchill on Saturday evening, into the early morning hours on Sunday.

The State of Vermont defines an extreme cold weather emergency using a threshold of –20 degrees Fahrenheit with the windchill factor. The city is acting to open additional shelter next week based on a number of factors, including: current estimates indicate upwards of 250 people are sleeping unsheltered in the region, with many rough sleeping; lack of seasonal shelter capacity; the State motel program is at capacity with upwards of 350 eligible households unable to get a room.

The City and CVOEO are working in partnership to ensure safe operation of this emergency shelter, and we are appreciative for the funding support of the Vermont Agency of Human Services.
