20 NEK Residents Receive Free Introductory Solar Training through NVDA and VCRD Partnership

Twenty NEK residents have been awarded free access to an introductory online course in Solar Installation & Design, thanks to a partnership between Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA) and the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD). This opportunity aims to boost renewable energy education and workforce development in the region, and it was made possible by the VCRD Climate Catalyst Innovation Fund.
Participants in the online course include residents and students from Barnet, Canaan, Coventry, Craftsbury, Danville, Jay, Lyndonville, St. Johnsbury, as well as additional in-person learning at Canaan Technical Center, North Country Career Center, North Country Union Highschool, and NETO Weatherization.
This collaboration is a prime example of how community-driven efforts, education, and innovation can come together to create lasting change, empowering residents of the Northeast Kingdom to take advantage of the growing solar industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.
The online course, designed for beginners, provides an entry-level introduction to solar installation and design. No prior experience is necessary in electrical systems and the course is ideal for anyone interested in learning about small-scale solar systems. “Whether you're a community member curious about renewable energy or someone looking to start a career in solar, this training is an excellent stepping stone,” says Hazen Converse, instructor at North Country Career Center.
The course is flexible, offered fully online, and allows students to work at their own pace. The curriculum covers the essential skills and knowledge required to design and install solar systems on a home or business.
With the rising demand for clean energy professionals and the continued push toward renewable energy solutions, this solar training initiative is an important step for the NEK in creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient future. “As more residents gain skills in solar installation and design, the region will be better positioned to benefit from the environmental and economic advantages of renewable energy,” said David Snedeker, NVDA executive director.
