City to Immediately Begin Planning Search for Next Chief of Police
Vermont Business Magazine Police Chief Jon Murad today announced publicly his decision not to seek reappointment in June of 2025. Chief Murad informed the Mayor of his decision in a letter dated November 4, 2024, and informed Police Department staff earlier this morning, November 19. He will continue to lead the department through the early part of 2025, while the administration engages in a search process to find the next Chief of Police.
Murad, a native of Burlington, did not offer a reason for stepping down in his resignation letter (see below).
“I am grateful for Chief Murad’s years of service to our community. First responders, especially those who are called to lead public safety departments, face increasingly difficult workloads and complex dynamics. As such, I appreciate his willingness to continue leading the Police department over the next several months and supporting a successful leadership transition” said Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak. “I look forward to honoring the Chief and his many contributions at a community celebration this Spring.”
“I am deeply grateful to Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak for reappointing me last June,” said Chief Jon Murad. “Serving the City of Burlington through the Police Department has been a privilege, and I’m proud of the women and men with whom I work every day. I know more great things are ahead for this storied department. This is why, during my four-and-a-half years as Chief, its preservation and stability has been my main focus. Although I don’t seek reappointment, I’m honored to stay and help facilitate a smooth, safe, and orderly transition as the City conducts a search for the department’s next leader.”
The City will engage in a national search process for the next Chief of Police. There will be more to share about the process in the coming weeks.
