Report Highlights Workforce Gaps and Calls for Expanded Access to Education

Vermont Business Magazine A newly released report from Vermont Talent Pipeline Management (VTPM) underscores a current and growing crisis in the healthcare industry: the shortage of qualified healthcare technicians and technologists. The report, developed in partnership with 13 hospitals across the state, highlights critical workforce gaps and the urgent need for expanded access to healthcare education at the certificate and associate degree levels.

According to the report, Vermont’s healthcare system is facing challenges filling positions that include radiological, surgical and medical lab technicians and technologists, respiratory therapists, and behavioral health technician roles. The shortage threatens the ability of healthcare facilities to provide timely and quality care, particularly in rural areas.

"Healthcare technicians and technologists are the backbone of our medical system," said Todd Fahey, Senior Director of Clinical Support Services and Security & Safety Officer at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. "Without an adequately trained workforce, patient care will be compromised. This report lays out clear steps that we must take to address the shortage and improve the access to education."

Call for Expanded Education Pathways
The report emphasizes the need for greater investment in certificate and associate degree programs that focus on healthcare professions. Expanding access to these educational pathways is essential for building a pipeline of skilled workers who can meet the increasing demand for healthcare services.

“Not everyone can commit to a four-year degree, but certificate and associate programs provide a faster, more affordable way to enter a healthcare career," said Fahey. "By making these training programs more accessible, hospitals can fill critical roles AND offer more Vermonters the opportunity for stable, well-paying careers in healthcare."

The report has been shared with healthcare, education and policy-making stakeholders across the state and the team is eager to ensure the message reaches as many Vermonters as possible, with a goal of developing talent pipelines.
