CVCOA empowers older Vermonters to reduce risk of a fall

Vermont Business Magazine Central Vermont Council on Aging (CVCOA) is committed to empowering all older adults in central Vermont to reduce their risk of falls, which are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65. Fourteen million, or 1 in 4, Americans age 65+ fall each year.

On September 23-27, 2024, Central Vermont Council on Aging is partnering with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to mark Falls Prevention Awareness Week.

Many people think falls are a normal part of aging. The truth is, they’re not. Most falls can be prevented – and you have the power to reduce your risk.

There are two things you can do right now to decrease your risk of a fall.

1. Learn six easy steps to prevent a fall at https://www.ncoa.org/article/6-steps-to-help-prevent-falls-in-older-adults/

2. Complete this short assessment to get your falls risk score at https://www.ncoa.org/tools/falls-free-checkup

Participating in a good balance and exercise program is an easy way to prevent a fall. CVCOA and our team of spectacular fitness volunteers provide classes throughout the region to help people become fitter, stronger, and more balanced. They also help you feel better, sleep better, and make new friends.

Ginny Callan of East Montpelier has been participating in the Twin Valley Senior Center Bone Builders class for 10 years and has seen its impact on her strength and fitness. “When I have fallen I have not broken any bones since I started [this class] . . . before that I broke my wrist twice when falling.”

Grab a friend and find a class near you on our website: https://www.cvcoa.org/exercise-and-wellness-classes.
