Vermont Business Magazine The property that was known as the Mark Skinner Library for nearly 12 decades, located in beautiful Manchester, Vermont, is hitting the auction block on Friday, November 22 at 11 am. The public auction will be held on site at 48 West Road in Manchester Center. An open house will be held on Sunday, November 10 from 11 am to 1 pm for potential buyers to tour the property. The auction is being held by the Thomas Hirchak Company, based in Morrisville, Vermont.
Built by the Skinner family in 1892, the mansion was dedicated as the Mark Skinner Library in 1897 by Skinner’s daughter, Frances Skinner Willing. The Skinner family has a long history of public service in Vermont. Richard Skinner (Mark’s father) served as the Bennington County State’s attorney in 1800 and Vermont’s governor in 1820. Skinner’s legacy was carried on by his son Mark who was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives.
The library moved from the building in 2014 to occupy a newer, contemporary home. The mansion was sold in 2015. Featuring 12,500 sq. ft. of space over six levels, the building is situated on 0.49± acre. Magnificent windows and light provide a unique window into the Manchester community. The original structure has undergone numerous renovations to recreate the space into residential living quarters. It is still a work in progress, but has the layout for a fabulous great room encased by a wall of windows, four completed bathrooms with wonderful tile work and two incomplete bathrooms, a home theater room with spacious bar recreation room, sauna room, right bedrooms (unfinished), and a wonderful original fireplace with oak mantle. The structure would be ideal for an event center, condominiums, a single family residence, or a retreat. Located in a visible section of the community, approval for use should be discussed with the town officials.
If Manchester is your kind of lifestyle, your dream is a bid away. Located about 150 miles from Boston and 200 miles from New York City, this is a great location. The property will be offered in its entirety. This important property has great potential and endless opportunities!
